QUICK SUMMARY
The Lone Wanderer begins on the edge of the fenced in Pegg Farmland, encounters a dying mercenary, who, as they die,
tells the player of the revered weapons cache inside the Pegg Farm. Using trickery, theft, murder, or persuasion, the player must
bypass the three Pegg brothers to acquire their weapons cache.
The Pegg Farmland is located several miles south of the native Fallout 3 environment, occupying several acres in western
Maryland down the Potomac River.
This is a single player mission in the Fallout 3 universe, after the vault escape. This mission is for many types of players,
including, but not limited to, those who kill, steal, convince, and / or trick their opponents.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW
C AMPAIGN
This mission is not part of any major or minor campaign. It is a standalone mission.
M ISSION L OCATION
rd
Setting: The Pegg Farm, Western Maryland, Post-Apocalyptic USA (23 Century)
Time: Variable
Season: Post-Nuclear Late Fall
Weather: Variable
M ISSION D IFFICULTY
First Section (Beginning and Raiding Party Encounter): 5/10 – This section of gameplay is combat-centric with few
moments of conversation. Centered on combat, this section receives an average difficulty while still maintaining the overall
image of the quest’s difficulty. The player is not multi-tasking – their only goal is combat, and deals with any further actions
in the next story breakdown section.
Second Section (Front Yard Betrayal): 4/10 – This section is rather short but thematically differentiated from the Third
Section in that it takes place in the same play space as the First section. Players must make tactical storyline decisions for
the quest but fight no or few enemies.
Third Section (Farmhouse): 4/10 – This section is of medium length and has sporadic combat of minor challenge, and
serves as a story transportation vessel between the first betrayal and the last. The optional quest is located in this section,
and bumps the difficulty rating up by one.
Fourth Section (Final Betrayal): 6/10 – This is the culmination of the quest’s goal. Primarily, scripting increases in the
difficulty based on how greedy the player gets. For example, if the player kills none of the brothers, the first brother they
kill is slightly above average in difficulty. However, if they try to kill the second brother, his difficulty is higher. The third
brother is essentially a boss, in whatever order the player fights them. Players only have to kill one of the brothers to gain
some of the weapons cache, but do not receive maximum benefit.

furniture, sparking electricity, and mechanical improvements scattered throughout.
o Pegg Farmhouse Fallout Shelter – Steel, heavy metal doors, metal grating and water under the floor panels, this

DETAILS
T HEME /M OOD
This level is about the betrayal of family, friend, and foe, desperation, and depreciation. This expresses itself several ways
throughout the level, including, but not limited to -
Three distinct visual themes – worn, fading, and dilapidated
Plywood fences
Cinder block barricades
Tarp tents
Fleeting, dead, and dying foliage
Cracked marble and stone
Broken columns
Sparking wires
Destroyed staircases
Rusted steel/metal
Water under floorboards
Low ceilings
All of these elements reiterate the worn, faded, and depreciated mood the theme represents. These qualities expressed show
the fleeting efforts of human survival. The dirt and gravel road shows that life used to be structured and maintained, and is now lost.
The plywood fences and cinder block barricades show the desperation of survival at the smallest level, whereas the destroyed
Farmhouse shows how much the highest can tumble down just as the low can fall just as far. Dim and flickering lights portray the
grim realization of the player’s situation.
A majority of the theme and setting convey through the destruction of the architecture and resourcefulness of surviving
residents.

Introduction – This is a standalone quest, so it does not need an introduction cinematic or machinima. The introduction of the
quest and the investigative objectives present themselves to the player in real-time during the course of the game.
In-Game –
o First Section – Play begins with the Lone Wanderer exploring a cave tunnel. The player can see moderately far down
the cave due to a makeshift lighting system strung about, indicating that there is stationary life nearby. As players
follow the trail of lights, they come upon a dying mercenary next to the cave exit. The mercenary tells the player of a
fortified Farmhouse in the next valley owned by the Brothers Pegg, rumored to have a treasure trove of weapons
stored inside. Seen as a Mecca for conquest, the weapons cache is a challenge that no man can resist. The cave exit
remains locked until accepting the quest from the mercenary. He gives the door key to the player, saying he was
keeping the secret cave route to the Pegg Farm hidden from common adventurers. The player exits the cave and
approaches the outer fence of the Pegg Farm. There is a hole in the chain links of the fence, allowing the player access
to the property. Upon nearing the front of the Farmhouse, Anthony Pegg yells for the player to talk to him. The player
gains access into the inner gate after helping Anthony Pegg collect weapons. Then, the player must help Anthony Pegg
defend against a raiding party of raiders.
o Second Section – James Pegg, the second Pegg brother, talks to the player through the front door to the house. James
admits that he is a crazy drug addict, and needs your aid taking the drugs from his (alive or deceased) brother’s stash.
The player must kill Anthony to get the stash, steal the key from Anthony, or trick the holding party to give it to him in
exchange for something. After bringing the drugs back to James Pegg, players gain access to the interior of the Pegg
Farmhouse.
o Third Section – James Pegg thanks the player and wanders off to utilize his newfound narcotics. The player attempts to
gain access to the underground fallout shelter, only to find that the power is running on reserve power and will not let

The Brothers Pegg 11/12/09 Fallout 3
them enter until they restore power to the remainder of the estate. After following the wires to the house’s control
center, the player must solve a puzzle to restore the electricity.
o Fourth Section (OPTIONAL) - If players inquire more about his specialized narcotics, he gives players an optional side
quest. On this quest, the player must venture through a psychedelic drug-induced experience in search of a fabled
strain of the drug that James Pegg loves. Upon entering the dream world, players explore, meeting a man who says he
has the item, but players must defeat a monster before earning the item. After fighting the giant pro-communism bug-
monster, players return to reality and give the item to James Pegg.
o Final Section – After restoring power to the Farmhouse, players gain access to the fallout shelter below. Upon entering,
players meet Frank Pegg. He tells the player about the weapons cache, and explains that only one key from the
brothers is needed to open the cache. However, if players did the extra quest, they learn that the more keys the user
has when they open the stash, the more weapons are available to them. Players must at least kill one brother for his
key, and may kill them all for extra challenge and reward.
Conclusion – This standalone quest ends after the player opens the weapons cache. All NPCs involved remain killable, but since
the weapons cache is open, players may not acquire more bonuses. The Farmhouse is a permanently explore able area
afterwards.
