Celebrating Christ UMC
At the April Board of Stewards meeting we had roundtable conversations answering sev-
eral questions regarding “serve”. Thanks to each of you who participated. Your feedback
is important as we move forward to being more “serve” oriented. Here are highlights of
the discussions. If you want to the full report please let me know.
1) Define serve….giving of time & talents, doing for others, love in action, carrying out
2) How would our church look different with “serve” as the ministry focus? More visible
in the community, get groups involved in existing community activities, make the
church look friendly, be known as “the big church that…”
3) To support the “serve” focus would our church structure need to be modified?
Kyle & Mindy Merten Committee to organize, publicize opportunities, repeated communication &
exposure, use screens in sanctuary, recruit “champions” to lead efforts.
4) What new opportunities should be pursued to achieve this goal? Outreach,
including other churches, mission trips, Christ UMC “Big Event”, matching spiritual
gifts & opportunities to serve.
5) How would “serve” impact the budget priorities? Part of stewardship is serving,
6) What currently inhibits a person from serving at Christ UMC? Communication,
timidity, time, clarity around commitment requirements, assumption others are
doing it, lack of experiencing the joy of serving others.
7) What community service opportunities would be beneficial to our church body?
Directory of members who provide services, Christ UMC “Big Event”, helping our
own members who need projects completed.
8) What service experiences are/were spiritually rewarding for you? Mission trips,
Southgate lunches, those where I was able to fill a “real” need.
9) How can the barriers to participating in service be removed or mitigated?
Mary Townsend Family service ideas, communication, better organization & planning, equip ,
educate, provide needed equipment, ask for help directly and mentor people.
