Late And Better - Kia Borrego
By Anthony B. Barthel
Imagine having a scratch-off lottery ticket that didn't pay off for three to four
years. What's more, that lottery ticket might not be redeemable for face value or even
at all after that time. Scary. That's what the auto industry is like.
When Kia's engineers began designing the Borrego, the market for mid-size
body-on-frame SUVs was explosive, with Ford barely being able to keep up with
demand for Explorers. Nowadays, vehicles in the Borrego's class barely show up on
shopper's radar screens. Gas used to be cheap and folks used to have jobs and mort-
gages and all those things.
What's Hot
For anyone who needs a mid-size SUV that can tow up to 7500 pounds with
seating for up to seven in a five-star safety rated environment that is very luxurious, the
Kia Borrego would be a very good vehicle to shop.
Since this type of vehicle is less on my own radar screen as a vehicle to eval-
uate, I hadn't really paid attention to the Borrego before it was dropped off at the
Curbside headquarters. My immediate impression was, "wow, this is exceptional."
Interior appointments were really good with things like a power adjustable steering
wheel that moves out of the way along with the seat (a la Lexus) to ease entry and exit,
and interior materials that felt they were sourced from quality providers.
Either a V6 or a V8, the first such engine in a Kia in the U.S., is available in the
Borrego with the tested model having the 3.8 liter V6. Those who opt for the eight-cylin-
der model will increase their ability to tow from 5000 to 7500 pounds and might notice
that this is the same 4.6 liter V8 found in the Hyundai Genesis. Or not.
The tested Borrego had the 3.8 liter V6 which could be used in engine design
text books for smoothness and sound quality. Other manufacturers, particularly those
who just got a bunch of cash from the feds, could do well to take one or two of these
engines apart to see what made it sound so sweet.
Two trim levels - LX and the tested EX - are available and the Borrego is
equipped to do real off-roading with a dual mode four-wheel drive system that includes
a hill descent feature.
While the caliber of interior materials impressed me, especially considering the
as-tested $36,295 price, what really was noteworthy was how well the engine and trans-
mission were matched to one another. Driving the Borrego was really a pleasure with
the vehicle being an asset rather than a source of frustration. Not that I would call this
a performance machine, but even recently I've driven other SUVs where I want to write
the folks who programmed the transmission and ask them if they've ever even driven
their own vehicles.
There's a lot of logical design in the Kia, and that is probably its strong suit. A
vehicle I had recently evaluated really made me feel like I was out of adjustment with
things, but as soon as I got into the Kia I felt right at home. Without any bother, I was
able to adjust the radio and cruise control, get the climate control to do as I wished and
basically drive with a machine that was designed to do so. No, this was no Corvette, but
that's not what its role in life is.
What might be the strongest selling point of the Kia brand might not be as
much as what it does do as what it doesn't do - annoy. The styling is somewhat anony-
mous but not at all unattractive, there is not one interior feature that really bugged me
and the drivetrain just does what it's supposed to. These are the sort of positive attrib-
utes that make you want to keep a vehicle for a very long time, and buy a new one from
the same manufacturer when it is time to swap.
What's Not
Body-on-frame SUVs give a feeling of being detached from what's going on
while navigating twisty roads, and the Borrego was no exception. This is part of the
penalty of gaining so much trailering ability but many buyers are also looking to car-
based SUVs that give up trailering for ride and handling.
One of the positives in the Kia was that there was a USB port for plugging in
one's annoying little devices so I plugged in my iPod and the Kia responded with "driv-
er not found." Seriously? For an iPod? I could understand if I had a Zune, but an iPod?
Oh well.
In Summary
While the Kia Borrego might not be the right car at the right time, there are still
plenty of folks who want an SUV that can be very utilitarian, go off road, hold a lot of
people and stuff and be a solid daily driver. For them, the Borrego would be very worth
considering.
While some vehicles might stand out for this or that, the Borrego is a vehicle I
could easily live with for many years without becoming annoyed at little features that
were bothersome. Considering Kia's 10 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and six
year, 60,000 mile general warranty the company might also believe this is a vehicle
you'll want to keep for a long time. Add that to a reasonable price and you have a good
reason to shop the Kia Borrego if a mid-size SUV is something you could love.

Bass Moves To Ensure
Maximum Use Of Funds
Leading a concerted effort to maximize the benefits of federal funding for
California and to help put California on track toward economic recovery, Assembly
Speaker Karen Bass, who represents Culver City, announces a series of upcom-
ing legislative hearings as part of the Assembly's aggressive approach to utilizing
funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and identifying
creative solutions for getting Californians back to work.
The Speaker also announced she will travel to the nation's capitol this

Duncan Ballantine, Nick Haley the state receives its fair share of other federal funds.
"Legislators made tough decisions on the budget last week to save jobs,"
Bass said. "Now we must all do all we can to create new jobs here in California.
And now is certainly not the time to let up in pressing for our fair-share of federal
funding."
Signed into law by President Barack Obama last week, the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will bring billions of dollars to California,
including more than $4 billion for transportation projects alone.
The first of the legislative hearings on stimulus was a joint informational
hearing of the Assembly Transportation Committee and Senate Transportation
and Housing Committee to give legislators an opportunity to examine the steps
California needs to take in order to maximize the transportation dollars in the
President's stimulus package.
All Assembly standing committees have been asked to join in looking at
the stimulus package for ways of maximizing benefit to California. Additionally,
Speaker Bass announced last week the new Assembly Stimulus, Economic
Recovery, and Jobs (SERJ) Task Force. SERJ will work in conjunction with local
governments, business leaders, workers, and community groups to find ways to
best leverage new federal funding and address the state's immediate economic
needs and long term goals.
"The Administration has committed to put Californians to work on shovel-
ready projects as soon as funding is released," Bass said. "We've done our home-
work and we've submitted a list of projects that are ready to go. We have to be that
aggressive with every facet of the stimulus package."
Continuing to build on her relationship with President Obama and his
Administration, Speaker Bass also announced she will travel to Washington, DC
to meet with high-ranking officials to continue pressing for California to get its fair
share of federal funds in other areas. She will also discuss California's foreclosure
crisis, its pending waiver before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and
other issues related to federal implementation of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act.

Out Of The Playoffs
Girls Win Once;
Boys are Defeated
By Dale Williams
Observer Reporter
For awhile, it looked like the Culver City High girls' basketball team was going
to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs.
The Centaurs, after knocking off North Torrance on its home court in the first
round last Thursday, appeared to be on the verge of winning again. They trailed Canyon
of Anaheim last Saturday by 10 points at halftime of their second-round game, but ral-
lied to pull within two points early in the fourth quarter.
Then, an official's call turned everything around.
Centaurs point guard Savannah Erskine was called for a foul, her fourth of the
game. As she went to the bench during a timeout, Erskine told Culver City coach Jack
Nakanishi that she thought it was a bad call.
"But the official said she was looking at him when she said 'bad call' but she
wasn't," Nakanishi said. "She was looking at me."
Nonetheless, the official whistled Erskine for a technical foul, her fifth foul of the
game, and the junior had fouled out with six minutes still remaining.
From there, it was all downhill for the Centaurs, who wound up losing 63-45,
ending their season.
"I was disappointed in the way the referee handled it," said Nakanishi, whose
team ended the season with a 15-14 record. "I usually don't complain about the refs, but
that was a terrible call. If he had called that technical on any other player, I might have
understood, but Savannah had never gotten a technical foul in her three seasons. It was
a bad call on the official's part.
"That changed the whole complexion of the game."
Without their point guard, the Centaurs' momentum was halted, and Canyon
controlled the rest of the game.
"I think we could have beaten them," Nakanishi said. "I thought we had a good
chance to get to the quarterfinals. It was unfortunate."
Even without playing the final six minutes, Erskine was Culver City's leading
scorer, with 16 points. Alex Lewis and Leigha Rose each had eight and Brianna Dekine
had seven points and 10 rebounds.
In the playoff win over North Torrance, the Centaurs trailed 33-29 at halftime but
held the Saxons to just 23 points in the second half to pull away for the win. Lewis had
15 points and Erskine and Bridget Mathews each scored 11.
The Centaurs lose Mathews, Rose and Dekine, who are seniors, but everyone
else will return next season.
"I think we're going to be very competitive next season," Nakanishi said. "I think
we'll contend for the Ocean League title and make the playoffs."
For the Culver City boys' basketball team, its first-round Division III-AA
playoff loss to Canyon of Anaheim was a lot like its season. The Centaurs played
well at times, not so well at others, and in the end they were found lacking.
Canyon outscored Culver City 25-9 in the second quarter as Canyon
broke the game open and went on to defeat the Centaurs 69-51. Culver City ended

Dodgers To Offer 500 Jobs
The Dodgers will hold a Job Fair this weekend to fill more than 500 seasonal
opportunities with the club and its partners who operate at Dodger Stadium.
The fair will take place in the Stadium Club and third baseline suites starting at
10 a.m. and continues through 4 p.m. on February 28 and March 1. Among the posi-
tions available are ushers, security, maintenance, and food service positions with Levy
Restaurants.
Starting at 9:30 a.m., prospective applicants can enter the Sunset Gate, where
they will receive descriptions of the various positions available.
During the season, more than 3,000 people work game days at Dodger
Stadium. In addition to the Dodgers' event this weekend, Dodger Stadium will be the site
for the 14th annual Community Job Fair, Saturday, March 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The
event gives opportunities for interaction with various organizations within the public and
private sector. Last year, approximately 4,000 participants from throughout Southern
California met representatives from Bally total Fitness, Federal Express, Macy's, Coca-
Cola, Sears, Primerica, University of Southern California, and the United States Secret
Service.
