“Boxing: A dying Sport”?
Could It Be The End Of Boxing?
Could it be that Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is taking over the combat sport world? Back in
the late eighties and in the nineties, boxing was one of the most antisipated events, up there with
basketball and football.
A Combat sport, also known as a Combative sport, is a competitive contact sport where two combatants
fight against each other using certain rules of engagement (usually significantly different from the rules
in simulated combats meant for practice or challenge in martial arts); typically with the aim of simulating
parts of real hand to hand combat. Boxing, kickboxing, amateur wrestling, mixed martial arts and
fencing is examples of combat sports (WIKIPEDIA).
Today’s society seems to be more in tuned with watching violence on TV, whether it’s movies, music
videos, even in cartoons our children our watching. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the
largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion company in the world that hosts most of the top-ranked
fighters and produces numerous events worldwide. The violent nature of the burgeoning sport quickly
drew the attention of the U.S. authorities.] Before reform, Senator John McCain prominently opposed
the UFC. Senator John McCain saw a tape of the first UFC events and immediately found it abhorrent.
McCain himself led a campaign to ban UFC, calling it "human cockfighting," and sending letters to the
governors of all fifty U.S. states asking them to ban the event. Thirty-six states enacted laws that banned
"no-holds-barred" fighting, including New York, which enacted the ban on the eve of UFC 12. The UFC
continued to air on DirecTV PPV, though its audience remained minuscule compared to the larger cable
pay-per-view platforms of the era (WIKIPEDIA).
However, boxing is still a work of art in combat form. It’s boxing style and techniques still hold the key to
our hearts when it comes to watching someone get the crap beat out of them. With fighters like Manny
Pacquiao, it can only get better.
