ing. Odyssey—A Journey to Healing, an
outgrowth of the creative arts therapy move-
ment, was developed by agency staff to pro-
vide an additional avenue to address the com-
plex mental health, developmental and
learning issues experienced by the abused
and abandoned children in our care. Creative
arts therapy evolved from the experience and
research of psychotherapists and other profes-
sionals who recognized that traditional thera-
pies were often too rigid to permit clients to
confront and work through problems. With
its language of metaphor, creative arts therapy
allows participants to express their feelings
and work productively, in a safe, non-threaten-
ing environment. Odyssey is designed to
release and develop the children’s creative cheers. The dancers and percussionists invited
potential through dance and music perform- children in the audience to participate in the
ance, poetry, and playwriting.
The Odyssey program, coordinated by
performance—and this was just the begin-
ning of their work together…

the agency has helped thousands of individuals–of all ages and from all walks of life–to thrive in their communities. Whether we’re working
with a child seeking an adoptive family, providing a low-income family with affordable child care, helping a teenager resist the pressure to take
drugs, providing a mentor for a vulnerable child, or offering support to those caring for elderly loved ones, we’re helping to build futures for
children, families, and communities throughout New Jersey. For more details about the agency’s more than 20 programs and services, please visit
