DISTRICT ATTORNEY
MISSION
The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s office represents the people of the State of Texas in all
felony and misdemeanor criminal cases in the district courts, county courts at law, and justice
courts. It is the primary duty of the District Attorney and his assistants, not to convict, but to see
that justice is done. Additionally, the District Attorney represents the State in asset forfeiture
cases, bond forfeitures cases, juvenile matters, Department of Human Services matters, and
protective orders as well as aiding crime victims through its victim assistance coordinator.
GOALS
Goal 1
Provide effective prosecution in all courts. To accomplish this, we must recruit new staff,
train, and maintain.
Objective 1 Recruitment requires that we continue our dynamic internship program,
whereby students are allowed to work and learn in a courtroom environment.
Objective 2 Become more competitive with Harris County for prosecutors, and pay them
at least 90 per cent of what Harris County does.
Objective 3 Upgrade positions to keep the best prosecutors. Currently, the office trains
prosecutors to become excellent lawyers, only to have them leave (and take
the County’s investment with them). A salary, which is more competitive
with Harris County, should be achieved.
Goal 2
Continue specialization to improve prosecution services.
Objective 1 Add assistants for the narcotics prosecutor and appellate attorney by 2002.
Objective 2 By 2005, the chief juvenile prosecutor will need another full-time assistant to
compliment the other attorneys who rotate between that division and the
misdemeanor divisions.
Objective 3 By 2005, the intake division will need another full-time assistant to
concentrate on felony cases, with the present method of rotating our
experienced assistant out of the misdemeanor division continuing. This
position will not be needed if a twenty-four hour intake system is developed.
Objective 5 Provide staff for twenty-four hour Intake Services. Currently, officers who
desire to file charges with our office must do so during working hours (8-5),
unless there is an emergency.
Goal 3
Increase services to victims of family violence
Objective 1 Increased public awareness as well as interest and ability on the part of law
enforcement to address family violence.
Objective 2 Add a prosecutor to handle protective orders and some of the criminal cases
in family violence cases. Seek grant funding for the position.
Objective 3 Add a full-time prosecutor and another secretary to handle the protective
order cases.
Objective 4 Develop a volunteer program to train people to type the statements of those
seeking protective orders.

Objective 5 Bring awareness of victimization to the citizens during Victim Rights Week,
a week of community participation and programs in support of crime victims
county wide.
Goal 4
Add additional positions and staff to address the growing prosecution demands.
Objective 1 Create an investigative division to keep up with the caseload.
Investigators are primarily responsible for assisting the prosecutors in their
preparation immediately before and during trial.
Objective 2 Keep up with increasing demands by merchants and citizens who are
victimized by hot check writers. This will require additional clerks as the
population of the County increases and the filings increase.
Objective 3 Add a coordinator to assist to help providing victims of crime with services
due under law.
Objective 4 Training future prosecutors through internship program. Uncompensated law
students can assist prosecutors and judges thereby saving the county money.
Goal 5
Expand current physical office layout.
Objective 1 Unite the court and attorney functions in a criminal justice center.
Objective 2 Relocate the Child Abuse and Children’s Protective Services Division to the
Fort Bend Child Advocate’s Building so they can interact better with each
other and the partner agencies which comprise the Child Advocacy Center.
These two divisions need better communication when it comes to case
evidence and resolutions. This can be accomplished by placing them under
the same roof.
