Grandparents Day is one of Holy Family’s most
cherished events. The excitement of the day can be
witnessed in the students as they anxiously wait
in the school’s foyer to greet their grandparents,
pin corsages on their grandmothers, and lead
their grandparents throughout the school. On
Grandparents Day, the students dote on their
grandparents for a change and they enjoy the rare
opportunity to do so. This year, attendance topped
360 with guests traveling from nine different
states.
The words of student speaker Michelle Wiehoff ‘11
eloquently capture the essence of the event held
September 24:
“ My grandpa taught me that change is a good
thing. He also reminded me how we have our past
memories to hold onto and nothing - nothing can
take that away. Getting older is a natural thing,
and although we grow out of some great things,
it is only because God has greater things in store
for us in the future.”
Grandparents are wise and knowledgeable educators
for our students, and for this reason, grandparents
are uniquely connected to the community of Holy
Family. Their presence within our school does
not end at the conclusion of Grandparents Day.
“What you [grandparents] offer is invaluable to our
students and integral to the culture of Holy Family,”
said Principal and Interim President Mrs. Kathleen
Brown. “Thank you for allowing us to celebrate you
1 1 in the lives of our young people.”

There was some serious toe-tapping
happening in the packed cafetorium
on the afternoon of Sunday, October 10
as Holy Family’s vocal music program
took to the stage under the guidance
of Mrs. Christine Funk and presented
“Don’t Stop Believin’: a journey through
Broadway, movie, and popular music.”
The Chorus, Camerata, and Chorale
all performed a variety of selections,
including “Yesterday” by The Beatles,
“America” from West Side Story, “Heal
1 the World” by Michael Jackson, and
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. As
the singers brought the songs to life
with their voices, a tantalizing energy
flowed throughout the room, making
it difficult for the audience to suppress
the desire to sing along.
Accompanying the harmonizing voices
were talented musicians from Holy
Family’s instrumental music program.

rhythm on drums. The cello, played
by Will Farner ‘14, added a beautiful
and haunting depth to the Camerata’s
performance of “Only Hope.” Later,
Luke Miller ‘13 rocked out on bass
along with chorus member Blake

Athletic teams at Holy Family are clearly understanding what parents have been telling them for years: “It’s not all about winning.” This is
not to say that victories aren’t occurring. It is that now, after introducing service to their programs, athletes have a different perspective on
competition. Both the volleyball and soccer programs have incorporated service events into their competition schedules.

Holy Family alumni are definitely familiar with
starting new traditions, so it shouldn’t come as
a surprise that Holy Family would like to start
a new alumni tradition. While we hope our fall
homecoming celebration will continue to grow, we’d
like our largest alumni gathering to take place when
most alumni can actually come home, which for most
alumni, means the winter holiday season.
This year the alumni gathering will be the evening of
December 21. You can expect to hear inspiring words
from your past teachers, see the Fire basketball
team take on the Mayer Lutheran Crusaders, and
tasty food, of course.
Mark your calendars and be sure to look for more
information coming soon to your e-mail in-box and
