Kudos, Kudos, and more Kudos to Congregation B’nai Amoona for
covering our Bimah, on Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur, with over 800 bags
of food and personal care donations for The Harvey Kornblum Jewish
Food Pantry. It was extremely impressive to stand in the back of
the sanctuary and look at the Bimah, seeing the amount of food and
personal items donated.
B’nai Amoona continues its tradition of being the congregation collecting
and donating the most food and personal care items during the High
Holy Days season. On Monday evening after Yom Kippur, over 30
volunteers came together to sort and box up the donations. This enabled
The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry to dispense these donations
quickly. Thank you to all the volunteers who did a fantastic job sorting
and packing up the donations. A special thank you goes to our USY’ers,
who consistently take time out of their busy schedules, to volunteer and
make a difference with many of our community service projects.

I know winter days appear shorter resulting from the The Congregation extends
limited number of daylight hours. But does that also mean
the actual hours are shorter too? My life is fueled by Red heartfelt sympathy
Bull, and yet I find it difficult to complete my daily to do list.
It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone when I say slowing down to the families of:
to smell the roses has become a foreign phrase, for now.
So, how does this relate to Minyan, and what does it matter?
Let me start by stating that B’nai Amoona is blessed
with a plethora of spectacular individuals, who participate in
                                                                          Viola Hoffman Beckerman
one way or another during daily Minyan. When the Gabbai
of each service approaches, giving you a particular honor, micHele carp
you can be certain they have confidence in your ability of
completing the task. Which brings me to a recent Monday pearl Dulsky
morning when Ron Heller asked Mel Rayman to read the
prayer for our country.
Many of you know Mel, was a solider in the US army
                                                                              roBert isackson
                                                                              DorotHy kaplan
where he was injured. Most recently, he suffered a stroke,
making reading out loud sort of difficult for him. So, when
Ron asked Mel to read the prayer for our country, I have to
admit, I was not thrilled. aDele perlmutter
It was Monday morning, like I said, the Torah portion
was long, and now we were reading the prayer o-n-e w-o-r-d

                                                                             selma perlmutter
                                                                               DaViD raDman
syllable of every word. I was struck with the reality of what
I was actually doing.
Every word was unique and important. Pictures ap-
peared in my head of clearing the land of vicious beasts and rose smitH rotman
nations not lifting up swords any more. The purpose of recit-
ing the prayer was jumping off the page and I must say, I was Joe scHuengel
proud to be standing in a free country able to slow down and
                                                                            tHelma (tiBy) stone
savor every word.
Afterwards, as we gathered to share bagels and banter,
I asked Mel if it was ok to share this story. Obviously, you
know the outcome. However, I don’t think Mel realized the erwin taryle
value he brought to all in attendance that Monday morning.
He made us slow down, smell the roses, and appreciate it like gertruDe wasserman
I think it’s meant to be read.
Rushing to arrive at the finish line first should be left to
marathon runners. I don’t think the prize for being the first to matilta Zeffren
finish praying is one I want to win anymore.
Please join me and your fellow B’nai Amoona members,
at the Minyan of your choice, as we pray to the beat of our
own needs.

December 2010 17 Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin
The rst candle is lit on Wednesday Evening, December 1st
The eighth candle should be lit Wednesday Evening, December 8th.

We light these Chanukah lights to remember the miracles, the wonders, and the battles, which God performed for our ancestors
in the days of Mattathias and his son, Judah Maccabee. During all eight days of Chanukah, these lights are sacred. We look
at them in order to express thanks and praise God for God’s miracles, wonders and deliverance.

Candles are lit on each of the eight nights of Chanukah: one the rst night, two the second, and an additional candle on each
subsequent night. The candle for the rst night is placed at the far right of the Menorah (Chanukiah); on each subsequent night,
another candle is added to the left. An extra candle, designated as the “Shamash,” (servant) is lit rst – then used to light the
others after the B’rakhot (blessings) are recited. Each night, the candles are lit from left to right, starting with the new candle.

On Shabbat Chanukah, the Chanukah lights are kindled before the Shabbat candles. It is customary to use special, extra-long
Chanukah candles, since the fulllment of the mitzvah requires that the Chanukah lights burn for at least one half hour after
    dark.

On Saturday night, the Chanukah candles are lit after Havdalah.

A dreidel is marked with four Hebrew letters: Nun, Gimmel, Heh and Shin. These letters stand for
 .
the Hebrew phrase “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham”, a great miracle happened there, referring to the
 miracle of the oil.

The letters also stand for the Yiddish words nit (nothing), gantz (all), halb (half) and shtell (put),
which are the rules of the game! There are some variations in the way people play the game, but the
way I learned it, everyone puts in one coin. A person spins the dreidel. If it lands on Nun, nothing
happens; on Gimmel (or, as we called it as kids, “gimme!”), you get the whole pot; on Heh, you get half of the pot; and
on Shin, you put one in. When the pot is empty, everybody puts one in. Keep playing until one person has everything.
Then redivide it, because nobody likes a poor winner.

 Recipe for Latkes
 Makes approximately 12 palm-sized latkes
     4 medium potatoes
     1 medium onion
     2 eggs
 3/4 cup matzah meal (our or bread crumbs can be substituted)
 salt and black pepper to taste
     vegetable oil
Shred the potatoes and onion into a large bowl. Press out all excess liquid.(if using a food processor, use the chopping
blade for 2 or 3 seconds after pressing out liquid to avoid stringy y-aways). Add eggs and mix well. Add matzah
meal gradually while mixing until the batter is doughy, not too dry. (you may not need the whole amount, depending
on how well you drained the veggies). Add a few dashes of salt and black pepper. (don’t taste the batter — it’s really
gross!). Don’t worry if the batter turns a little orange; that will go away when it fries.

Heat about 1/2 inch of oil to medium-high heat. Form the batter into thin patties about the size of your palm. Fry
batter in oil. Be patient: this takes time, and too much ipping will burn the outside without cooking the inside. Flip
when the bottom is golden brown.

Place nished latkes on paper towels to drain. Eat hot with sour cream or applesauce. They reheat OK in a microwave,
but not in an oven unless you cook them just right.

If you’d like to try something a little different, add some bell peppers, parsley, carrots, celery, or other vegetables to
the batter to make veggie latkes! You may need to add a third egg and some more matzah meal for this. For a zesty
twist, add some diced jalepeño peppers to the batter! This should denitely be served with sour cream!

 Time-saving substitutions:

Grocery stores now provide many time-saving options for cooking. The substitutions below will save you time in
preparing the batter and cleaning up. Sorry, nothing I can do to speed the frying time. You can substitute any or all of
 these:

 Substitute 3 cups hash-brown style shredded potatoes for the potatoes (Simply Potatoes brand works well and
       is kosher-certied)

 Substitute 1 cup frozen chopped onions (thawed and drained) for the onion

 Substitute 1/2 cup egg whites from a carton for the eggs

Information on this page taken from www.jewfaq.org
