Essential oils
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being.
Essential oils, the pure essence of a plant, have been found to provide both psychological and physical benefits when used
correctly and safely. The Essential Oil Profiles area details over 90 essential oils. Absolutes, CO2s and Hydrosols are also
commonly utilized in aromatherapy. Although essential oils, CO2 extracts and absolutes are distilled by different methods, the
term essential oil is sometimes used as a blanket term to include all natural, aromatic, volatile, plant oils including CO2s and
absolutes.
In addition to essential oils, aromatherapy encourages the use of other complementary natural ingredients including cold
pressed vegetable oils, jojoba (a liquid wax), hydrosols, herbs, milk powders, sea salts, sugars (an exfoliant), clays and muds.
Products that include synthetic ingredients are frowned upon in holistic aromatherapy. It is important to note that perfume oils
also known as fragrance oils (and usually listed as "fragrance" on an ingredient label) are not the same as essential oils.
Fragrance oils and perfume oils contain synthetic chemicals and do not provide the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.
Buyer Beware: The United States does not regulate the use of the word aromatherapy on product packaging, labeling or in
product advertising, so any product can be marketed as a product suitable for aromatherapy. There are quite a few products on
the market that contain unnatural ingredients including fragrance oils and claim to be aromatherapeutic. It's important to look
at the ingredient label when seeking true aromatherapy products.
Also, use caution with marketing claims that state a product is "Made With Essential Oils" or "Made With Natural Ingredients."
Claims like these do not state that the product is only made with the ingredient(s) specified. Such products may contain heavy
proportions of synthetic fragrance oils and only contain a minute quantity of essential oil to simply be able to profess the
"Made With Essential Oils" claim.
Don't let false marketing hype scare you away from the benefits of holistic aromatherapy. By exploring AromaWeb and other
aromatherapy resources, you can learn how to safely use just a few essential oils and start gaining the benefits of
aromatherapy. If you realize you hold an even deeper interest, you can learn to make your own products and control the exact
ingredients included in your own personal aromatherapy products.
What are Essential Oils?
An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from
the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils, contrary
to the use of the word "oil" are not really oily-feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but
some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.
Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are
highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.
Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived
from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial
substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer. See the What
are Fragrance Oils? article for more information on fragrance oils and why they are not used
in aromatherapy.
The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils can provide valuable psychological and
physical therapeutic benefits. These benefits are usually achieved through methods
including inhalation and application of the diluted oil to the skin.
For detailed profiles on over 100 oils, see the Essential Oil Profiles area.
Essential oils are often used by diluting them with a carrier oil (sweet almond oil, apricot
kernel oil, grapeseed oil) and then applying this blend to the skin for absorption. See the
Carrier Oil Profile section for more detailed information about carrier oils.
Careful inhalation of the oils can also provide therapeutic benefit as the oil molecules enter
the lungs and are absorbed into the bloodstream.
Essential Oils are usually sold for individual use in very small bottles. See the Storing Your
Oils page for information on how to store your oils and to view pictures of essential oil
bottles.
Essential oils can very greatly in quality and price. Various factors that can affect the quality
and price of the oil include the rarity of the plant, country and conditions that the plant was
grown, quality standards of the distiller, and how much oil is produced by the plant.
Essential oils can often be purchased as blends of several essential oils. The advantage if it is
a blend of pure essential oils is that you can save from having to buy every essential oil
individually. The disadvantage is that you have no control over the blend by not mixing it
yourself nor can you reliably mix the blend with other oils.

Essential Oil Uses
Introducing essential oils into your lifestyle can be quite easy, fun, and therapeutically
beneficial. Below are a few ways in which you can get started. These methods are
intended as guidelines only, and you do need to pay special attention to all safety pre
cautions applicable for each oil that you choose. It is also important to remember that
essential oils are flammable.
Easy Inhalation - Place 3-4 drops of essential oil on a tissue. Place the tissue
near your nose and inhale. When trying an oil for the first time, use only one
drop to ensure that you do not have a sensitivity or reaction to the oil.
Steam Inhalation - Boil 2 cups of water. Pour the water into a bowl and add
3-7 drops of oil to the water. Use fewer drops if you are using an oil that may
cause irritation to your mucous membranes (i.e. cinnamon, eucalyptus,
rosemary, pine, thyme, cajuput, etc.). Place your nose about 12" away from
the bowl and inhale. Don't inhale the steam constantly and if you notice any
irritation or discomfort, stop immediately. Steam inhalation can help with
colds and influenza. Use of energizing or relaxing oils can also make this
method useful any time of day or night.
Room Freshening - Use the steam inhalation method noted above but don't
directly inhale into the bowl. Use up to 10 drops of oil. Use fewer drops if you
are using an oil that may cause sensitization. Other methods including use of
an aromatherapy diffuser or lamp scent ring available through many
aromatherapy companies.
General Household Freshening - Add a few drops of oil to your trash can,
laundry wash, drain, vacuum bag filter, or on a tissue for placement in your
drawers.
Bug Repellent - Many essential oils including citronella, lavender, and
peppermint act as a natural repellent against insects. Sprinkle a few drops of
essential oil onto tissues or cotton balls and place near your doorways and
windows to help repel insects. Be sure to read all safety data on the oils you
use as some oils may not be suitable for use around pets. Be careful not to
apply the essential oil directly onto fragile surfaces.
Massage - Add up to 20 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce carrier oil such as
sweet almond oil and massage onto yourself or partner. Keep away from eyes
and genital areas. Do not apply essential oils to the skin without first diluting
them. Be sure to also read the safety data for the essential oils you choose to
use.
Bath - Add 5-7 drops essential oil to 1 ounce carrier oil. Add this blend to
your running bath water and mix well before getting into the tub. Be sure to
read the safety data for the essential oils you choose to use.
Other Uses
Essential oils can be used in making homemade lotions, facial toners, shampoos,
perfumes, soaps, shower gels, and other natural products. Additionally, essential oils
are often blended for their therapeutic synergistic abilities. The Recipes area includes
many recipes and synergies.
Essential Oil Safety Information
Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that can be harmful if not used carefully.
Implementing aromatherapy into your lifestyle shouldn't cause paranoia or undue worry. By
treating essential oils as medicines and following the steps outlined below, you will be well
on your way to safely enjoying the many benefits that aromatherapy can offer.
These safety guidelines are not a complete safety reference for the proper use of essential oils.
When in doubt, consult your physician and/or a qualified and trained aromatherapy
practitioner.
Essential oils should never be used undiluted on the skin. There are instances
when experienced aromatherapy users and practitioners make exceptions to this
precaution, but only once significant essential oil knowledge is gained should you
ever attempt to apply an undiluted oil on the skin. Lavender and tea tree are listed by
a large number of aromatherapy sources as being oils that can be used undiluted.
Undiluted use of lavender and tea tree, however, should be avoided as severe
sensitivity still could occur in some individuals. Again, the safest rule of thumb is to
never use any essential oil undiluted.
Some oils can cause sensitization or allergic reactions in some individuals. When
using a new oil for the first time, do a skin patch on a small area of skin. Place a small
amount of the diluted essential oil (never use essential oils undiluted on the skin) on
the inside of your elbow and apply a bandage. Wait 24 hours to see if there is any
form of reaction. Even if a particular essential oil is not known to cause irritation, this
step should not be ignored. Even if an oil does not irritate you, it still can irritate
someone else. It is important that you always keep that in mind.
Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy or by those with asthma,
epilepsy, or with other health conditions.
Less IS More. When using essential oils, use the smallest amount of essential oils
that will get the job done. If one drop will get the job done, for example, don't use two
drops.
Not all essential oils are suitable for use in aromatherapy. Wormood, pennyroyal,
onion, camphor, horseradish, wintergreen, rue, bitter almond and sassafras are some
of the essential oils that should only be used by qualified aromatherapy practitioners,
if ever at all.
Never let children use essential oils without the presence of an adult
knowledgeable about their use. Most essential oils smell wonderful and many
essential oils such as citrus oils can smell like they are safe to drink. Keep your
essential oils away from children. Treat the oils like medicines that are poison in
unknowing hands.
Essential oils should not be taken internally. Essential oils should only be taken
internally after receiving a detailed consultation and prescription from a trained and
qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
Essential oils are flammable. Keep them out of the way of fire hazards.

analgesic, anti depressant, anti microbial, anti pyretic, anti septic, astringent,
bactericidal, carminative, deodorant, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicidal, galactogogue,
insecticidal, nervine, sedative and tonic.
Essential Oil of Lemongrass is extracted with the help of steam distillation of dried
Lemongrass. The Lemongrass is known by scientific names Cymbopogon Citratus or
Andropogon Citratus. Main constituents of its essential oil are Myrcene, Citronellal,
Geranyl Acetate, Nerol, Geraniol, Neral, Limonene and Citral. Justifying its name, the
Lemongrass smells just like Lemon, but it is more mild and sweet. It is not sour to
taste. This grass is used in countless beverages (including tea), desserts and other
forms of culinary as a flavoring agent, where fresh lemon is not available or is not to
be used. It is very much in use in Chinese and Thai recipes. It grows and spreads very
fast like any other grass and fetches a good price in the market. Thus there is a lot of
business involved in this.
What’s more, it comes with many medicinal properties too. Let us see what these
properties are.
Analgesic: Analgesic is a property that reduces pain and inflammation. Lemongrass
Essential Oil helps relieve pain in muscles, joints, toothache and headache etc.
resulting from viral infections like cough & cold, influenza, fever, pox etc. It also
helps cure body pain resulting from sudden exercises, sports etc.
Anti Depressant: Lemongrass Oil boosts self esteem, confidence, hope and mental
strength, uplifts spirit and fights depression. This can be very helpful to drive away
depression for those who are suffering from depression due to failure in career or
love, insecurity, loneliness, stagnation, someone’s death or any other reason. This
also relieves anxiety. Being an anti depressant, it can be systematically administered
to patients of acute depression who are undergoing rehabilitation after some shock.
Just take it with tea and relax.
Anti Microbial and Anti Bacterial: This has anti microbial properties which makes it
inhibit microbial and bacterial growth in the body, internally or externally. It is seen
to be effective in inhibiting bacterial infections in colon, stomach, urinary tracts,
wounds, respiratory system etc. and helps cure diseases resulting from bacterial or
microbial infections such as typhoid, food poisoning, skin diseases, body odor,
malaria (caused due to protozoon) etc.
Anti Pyretic: An anti pyretic is an agent that brings down very high fever. This is
quite similar to febrifuge but is effective on very high fever too. This oil can bring
down the fever when it tends to reach the danger mark. This property of
Lemongrass, which comes from its essential oils, is extensively used. It is often given
with tea for this purpose.
Anti Septic: The anti septic properties of Lemongrass Oil makes it a good application
for external and internal wounds as well as an ingredient of the anti septic lotions
and creams. The anti septic properties of this oil do not let the external and internal
cuts and wounds go septic.
Astringent: An astringent helps stoppage of blood flow by contraction of blood
vessels. If somebody is bleeding profusely, you need an astringent to speed up
clotting of blood and stop the flow to save his life. Being an astringent helps in a
different way too. It promotes contraction of gums, hair follicles, muscles, skin and
blood vessels, thereby preventing loosening and fall of teeth, hair fall and flow of
blood through vessels. Both of these properties can be life saving. This oil has good
astringent properties.
Carminative: Lemongrass Essential Oil can efficiently handle gas trouble. It does not
only help remove gas from intestine, but also stops further gas formation.
Moreover, it gives the gases a safe downward passage by relaxing the muscles in the
abdominal region.
Deodorant: The Lemongrass Oil is far better than those synthetic deodorants which
cost heavy on the pockets and the environment and their effects do not last longer
too. Moreover, sometimes they produce irritations on skin and allergies. This oil can
be a far better choice as a deodorant from these points of view. In diluted form, it
serves as an efficient deodorant without any side effects. The best thing about this is
that it is herbal
Diuretic: Lemongrass Oil increases urination, both in frequency and in quantity. This
may sound not that important but it can be very beneficial for health. With urine,
fats are lost from the body to the extent of 4% of the volume of urine. So, it is
obvious, the more you urinate, the more you lose fat. Then, urination promotes
digestion and also does not let gas form. It removes excess water from the body and
reduces swelling etc. Its biggest contribution is that it removes toxins from the body.
What’s more, it also reduces blood pressure. That is the reason most of the drugs for
lowering blood pressure induce frequent urination. Urination also helps clean
kidneys.
Febrifuge: Lemongrass Oil helps bring down fever by fighting the infections due to
which the fever is caused as well as by increasing perspiration.
Fungicidal: Lemongrass Oil has good fungicidal properties and may be used to cure
fungal infections, both external and internal.
Galactogogue: Galactogogue is a substance or an agent that increases formation of
milk in the breasts. It also enhances the quality of milk. This property is very helpful
for the lactating mothers and the babies. Lemongrass oil is a Galactogogue. Apart
from increasing milk, it also helps babies in another way. Babies are prone to
infections. The anti microbial and anti bacterial properties of Lemongrass oil are also
absorbed in the milk and thus indirectly help the baby get rid of such infections.
Insecticidal: Lemongrass is quite popular as an insect repellant due to its insecticidal
properties. It kills insects and also keeps them away (but I am not sure whether it
repels cockroaches!).
Nervine: Lemongrass Essential Oil acts as a tonic for the nerves and the nervous
system. It helps cure many nervous disorders such as shaking hands or limbs,
nervousness, vertigo, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and convulsions,
sluggishness, lack of reflexes etc. It strengthens nerves and activates them.
Sedative: This is perhaps one of the most important and most appreciated medicinal
properties of Lemongrass Oil. It is an excellent sedative. It has a great soothing,
sedating and calming effects on mind, cures inflammations, itching of skin and
relieves tension and anxiety. This feature can help patients of insomnia too.
Tonic: An agent which tones up and boosts health is a tonic. Lemongrass Oil is a
tonic in real sense. It tones all the systems functioning in the body, such as
respiratory system, digestive system, nervous system and excretory system and
facilitates absorption of nutrients in the body, thus providing strength and
strengthening immune system.
Other Benefits: Helps cure cellulite, fungal infections and digestive problems and
reduces excessive perspiration too.
Few Words of Caution: It is likely to irritate skin and produce other types of
irritations too. Hence it should be avoided during pregnancy.
Blending: Lemongrass Essential Oil goes fine with essential oils of Basil, Cedar
Wood, Coriander, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Lavandin and Tea Tree.

them, thereby adding to the effect.
Anti Spasmodic: A spasm in the respiratory system can make you suffer from
breathing troubles, congestion and exhausting coughs while muscular spasm gives
cramps and muscle pulls, which are very painful. Spasm in the digestive system
(intestines etc.) can cause vomiting and pulling aches in the stomach and intestines
while a spasm in the nervous system gives nervous afflictions and convulsions.

Mandarin Essential Oil. Just a few drops and the spasm cured. You get a pleasing

prevents diseases resulting from deposition of toxins, such as abscesses, boils, acne,
gout & arthritis etc.

provoking discharges of digestive juices and bile into the stomach. It also increases
appetite.

from it and protects it from infections. It also strengthens liver.

metabolic system in proper shape, gives strength and boosts immunity.

from inflammation, you need a sedative to let you relax. The artificial sedatives or
drugs available in the market are mostly tranquilizers based on narcotics such as

internal organs. Better to follow a natural one like this Orange Oil. It gives relief from

The health benefits of Thyme Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties like anti
spasmodic, anti rheumatic, anti septic, bactericidal, bechic, cardiac, carminative, cicatrisant,
diuretic, emenagogue, expectorant, hypertensive, insecticide, stimulant, tonic and vermifuge.
Thyme is a common herb and is generally used as a condiment or spice. Besides that, thyme
is also used in herbal and domestic medicines. Thyme is botanically known as Thymus
Vulgaris. The medicinal properties of thyme come mainly from its essential oil which is
extracted through steam distillation of fresh flowers and leaves. The chief constituents of its
essential oil are Alpha Thujone, Alpha Pinene, Camphene, Beta Pinene, Para Cymene, Alpha
Terpinene, Linalool, Borneol, Beta Caryophyllene, Thymol and Carvacrol.
Its medicinal properties can be summarized as under the following heads;
Anti Spasmodic: Millions of people around the world suffer from coughs, cramps and aches
due to spasm. Spasm is unwanted and excessive involuntary contraction which may take
place in respiratory tracts, nerves, muscles, intestines and other organs and may result in
coughs, convulsions, epileptic or hysteric attacks, cramps and muscular aches, abdominal
and intestinal aches and even spasmodic cholera.
Anti Rheumatic: There are two main reasons behind rheumatism, arthritis and gout. The first
is improper or obstructed circulation and the second one is growing concentration of toxins
like uric acid in the blood stream. Thyme Essential Oil can sort out both of these problems.
Being a diuretic, it increases urination and helps removal of toxins. Being a stimulant, it
stimulates or activates circulation and thereby sorts out this problem too. Both ways, it helps
cure rheumatism.
Anti Septic: It is a good anti septic and safeguards wounds and sores against infections. This
is mainly due to presence of components like Caryophyllene and Camphene in this essential
oil.
Bactericidal: The same Caryophyllene and Camphene, along with a few other components,
give Thyme Essential Oil anti bacterial properties. This inhibits bacterial growth in and
outside the body. It kills bacteria as well as keeps them away. This is particularly beneficial in
curing bacterial infections like B-Colitis, renal colic, bacterial infections in the genitals and
urethra, intestines, respiratory system etc. as well as on wounds.
Bechic: If you are suffering from coughs for a long time and antibiotics cannot help you
anymore, then you may give this essential oil a try. Unlike when using potent antibiotics, you
need not risk your kidneys, heart, liver, stomach and eyes with this oil. This is capable of
curing infections in the chest (lungs, bronchi, larynx and pharynx) and stopping coughs.
Cardiac: This is a very important and useful property of Thyme Essential Oil in today’s
context, when heart troubles are growing at an alarming rate. This oil is very beneficial for
the heart. It keeps its valves functioning properly; being an anti spasmodic, it relaxes the
arteries and veins and thereby reduces blood pressure as well as the stress on heart;
strengthens cardiac muscles and tones up the heart, being a tonic. So, it is very good from
the point of view of all round development of the heart.
Carminative: Gases, building up in the stomach and intestines, are not as innocent as they
appear. Their effect is not limited to bad air alone. They can take your appetite and sleep
away, raise your blood pressure, pose a threat to your heart, give you severe stomach aches,
cramps, vomiting, headaches and nausea and in extreme cases, put your life in danger too.
So, gas must be handled with care (not the cooking gas alone) and treated in time. The
Thyme Essential Oil, being a carminative and an anti spasmodic, forces removal of the gases
through a downward movement (the upward movement is very dangerous) and does not let
them build up again.
Cicatrisant: This is a beautiful property of the Thyme Essential Oil and it adds to beauty too.
This property makes the scars and other ugly spots on your body vanish. These include the
surgical marks, marks left by accidental injuries, acne, pox, measles, sores etc.
Diuretic: Those who are suffering from accumulation of water in the body due to chronic
renal failure or other reasons or from growing concentration of toxins and sodium salts in
the blood are sure to gain from this oil. It increases urination and helps removal of excess
water, salts and toxins from the body. This helps reduce weight, lower blood pressure,
reduce fats and improves digestion too.
Emenagogue: Women must be interested in this property of Thyme Essential Oil. They have
always been searching for something that could give them relief from obstructed and painful
menstruations, irregular periods and untimely menopause. So, they have their answers in
this oil. It opens obstructed menses, gives relief from the symptoms like abdominal pain,
fatigue, nausea, depression and low blood pressure etc. associated with menstruations and
push away menopause too, thereby keeping women healthy, happy and fertile. This it does
by stimulating production of certain hormones like estrogen.
Expectorant: Where there is cough and cold, there is an expectorant needed. Here is one!
The Thyme Essential Oil. It helps cure infections causing cough and cold and opens
congestion, thereby giving relief from cough and cold.
Hypertensive: You might raise your eyebrows about this medicinal property and raise a
question about its benefits. But this property is no doubt beneficial, for those who are
suffering from low blood pressure. They run the risk of falling unconscious anytime. This oil
can normalize their blood pressure by raising it.
Insecticide: It keeps away insects, pests and kills them. It can be effectively used to keep
away parasites on human body like mosquitoes, fleas, lice, bed-bugs, flies etc. as well as
insects from the food grains and clothes like beetles, moths etc.
Stimulant: It stimulates circulation, digestion, nervous responses and secretion of hormones
and thereby stimulating the whole metabolism.
Tonic: Tones up the circulatory system, heart, digestive system, nervous system, muscles and
skin, fortify them and boosts immunity.
Vermifuge: Kills worms. You can try it on the intestinal worms (round worms and tape
worms), maggots in sores and even hook worm (which does not go easily).
Other Benefits: Acts as a memory booster and anti depressant and helps to concentrate and
helps cure sinusitis, bronchitis, anorexia, cellulite, eczema, athlete’s foot, dermatitis, insect
and animal bites, stings, laryngitis, pharyngitis and other infections. Can be used to keep off
bad breath and body odor.
Few Words of Caution: It is irritant, hypertensive (increases blood pressure) and sensitizing.
It should be avoided in pregnancy. It may cause allergy in some cases.
Blending: The Essential Oil of Thyme blends well with essential oils of Bergamot,
Grapefruit, Lemon, Lavender, Rosemary and Pine.
Geranium
The health benefits of Geranium Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties like
astringent, haemostatic, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, diuretic, deodorant, styptic, tonic,
vermifuge and vulnerary etc.
The Essential Oil of Geranium is extracted through steam distillation of stem and
leaves of Geranium plant, bearing scientific name Pelargonium Odorantissimum. The
main components of this oil are Alpha Pinene, Myrcene, Limonene, Menthone,
Linalool, Geranyl Acetate, Citronellol, Geraniol and Geranyl Butyrate.
The Essential Oil of Geranium has a lot to offer in terms of health. We can benefit
from the following properties of Geranium Oil.
Astringent: The main function of an astringent is to induce contractions. Accordingly
Geranium Oil, being an astringent, makes the gums, muscles (including contraction
of abdominal muscles which gives you a better look), intestines, skin, tissues and
blood vessels to contract. This may be helpful in many ways. It can prevent muscles
and skin from hanging loose, untimely loosening and fall of teeth, wrinkles and can
even stop haemorrhage by contracting blood vessels.
Anti Bacterial & Anti Microbial: This property does not let bacteria or microbes
develop on wounds and otherwise and keeps you safe from infections.
Haemostatic: Geranium Oil can stop haemorrhage in two ways. First, being an
astringent (more specifically, a styptic), it causes contraction of blood vessels and
helps stop flow of blood, as discussed above. Second, being a Haemostatic, it speeds
up coagulation or clotting of blood.
Cicatrisant: Everybody wants that his or her skin to be free from scars and after
marks of fat-cracks, surgeries, boils and acne or pox. But after spending a fortune
and trying nearly all the cosmetics available in the market when you end up with
nothing, you really feel bad. You could have checked this had you tried Geranium Oil
first. It is a Cicatrisant, that is, it helps the scars and other spots on skin to fade and
vanish. It facilitates blood circulation just below the surface of skin and also helps
make distribution of melanin uniform.
Cytophylactic: Geranium Oil promotes cell health and also encourages recycling of
dead cell and regeneration of new cells. This helps in the growth of the body cells as
well as gametes.
Diuretic: This oil has diuretic properties, which means that it increases urination.
Now here is something you should know. Urination is one of the three natural ways
(the others are excretion and perspiration) and is the most effective way of removal
of toxins from the body. These toxins are urea, uric acid, bile salts, pathogens and
other synthetic or chemical substances, heavy metals, pollutants and even sugar.
Moreover, each time you urinate, fats amounting to 4% of the volume of urine and
excess water are also removed from the body. Urination also aids digestion and
prohibits formation of gases in the intestine. It is also an effective way of removal of
excess acids and bile secreted in the stomach. Urination also reduces blood pressure
because the more you urinate, more the sodium is removed and blood pressure is
reduced.
Deodorant: Geranium Oil has a very pleasing and uplifting aroma, something like a
combination of fragrance of a flower and mint. Now you can imagine what a nice
deodorant it would make. Its effect also lasts long and it is not harsh on skin either.
Further, owing to its property of regulating sebum production and being a mild anti
bacterial, it aids eliminating body odor.
Styptic: This is almost synonymous to Haemostatic with a slight difference. Being a
styptic means being a haemostatic owing to astringent properties. A styptic, here
Geranium Oil, causes the blood vessels to contract and thus slows down or stops
flow of blood.
Tonic: A tonic is what tones up complete health. Internally, it makes all the systems
and functions work properly in the body by influencing endocrinal glands for
regulating secretion of various hormones, enzymes, acids and bile etc. and toning up
the respiratory system, digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system and
excretory system. Apparently, it tones up muscles and skin and gives you a better
look. Geranium Oil has these properties.
Vermifuge: This particular property is very beneficial for those children (sometimes
even adults) who suffer from intestinal worms. Geranium Oil is a vermifuge and can
help you get rid of this nasty problem.
Vulnerary: Geranium Oil speeds up healing of wounds, cut and surgical incisions.
This property makes it a vulnerary. Perhaps, it is due to its other properties like
Haemostatic, Styptic, Anti Bacterial, Anti Microbial and Cytophylactic.
Other Benefits: It can be fruitful if employed in treatment of acne, dermatitis and
other skin diseases etc, infections of nose, throat and other respiratory organs,
eczema, neuralgia, burns, ulcers, tonsillitis, Post Menopause Syndrome etc. Further,
it has great mental uplifting effects and can be very effective in treating depression,
anxiety, anger etc.
Few Words of Caution: It can have sensitizing effects in rare cases. Since it
influences certain hormone secretions, it is therefore not advised for pregnant ladies.
Blending: The Essential Oils which form fine blends with Geranium Oil are
Angelica, Bergamot, Basil, Lavandin, Cedar Wood, Carrot Seed, Citronella,
Lavender, Neroli, Lime, Orange, Lemon, Jasmine, Grapefruit and Rosemary Oil.
Eucalyptus
The health benefits of eucalyptus oil can be attributed to its anti-inflammatory,
antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating, and
other medicinal properties. Eucalyptus essential oil is colorless and has a distinct taste
and odor.
Though eucalyptus essential oil has most of the properties of a typical volatile oil, it is
not very popular as an aromatherapy oil as it was little known before a few centuries.
However, the numerous health benefits of eucalyptus oil have attracted the attention
of the entire world to explore its usage in aromatherapy as well as conventional
medicine.
Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained from fresh leaves of the tall evergreen eucalyptus
tree. The tree, which has the botanical name Eucalyptus Globulus is also known as
fever tree, blue gum tree or stringy bark tree. Eucalyptus is native to Australia and has
spread in the past few centuries to other parts of the world including India, Europe
and South Africa. Though many countries produce eucalyptus oil in small quantities,
the prime source of eucalyptus oil for the world is Australia.
Due to the medicinal uses of eucalyptus oil and the compound eucalyptol present in it,
it is used in a variety of over the counter drugs including rubs, inhalers, liniments,
rash creams, and mouthwashes. The health benefits of eucalyptus oil include the
following:
Respiratory Problems: Eucalyptus essential oil is effective for treating a number of
respiratory problems including cold, cough, running nose, sore throat, asthma, nasal
congestion, bronchitis and sinusitis. Eucalyptus oil is antibacterial, antifungal,
antimicrobial, antiviral, anti inflammatory and decongestant in nature which makes
it a good ingredient for many medicines for treating respiratory problems. A study
published in Laryngoscope in 2004 shows its usefulness in treating non-bacterial
sinusitis. Patients suffering from non-bacterial sinusitis showed faster improvement
when given medicines containing eucalyptus oil. Gargles of eucalyptus oil mixed with
warm water are effective on treating sore throat.
Wounds: Eucalyptus essential oil is a good antiseptic owing to its germicidal
properties. On its exposure to air, ozone is formed which is a well-known antiseptic.
Hence eucalyptus oil is used for healing wounds, ulcers, burns, cuts, abrasions and
sores. It is also effective on insect bites and stings.
Muscle Pain: During muscle and joint pains, massaging eucalyptus oil on the skin
surface helps in getting relief from the pain. The volatile eucalyptus oil is analgesic
and anti inflammatory in nature. Therefore it is often recommended to patients
suffering from rheumatism, lumbago, sprained ligaments and tendons, stiff muscles,
aches, fibrosis and even nerve pain. The oil is massage in circular motion on affected
areas.
Mental Exhaustion: An important reason why people like using eucalyptus oil is that
it provides a cooling and refreshing effect. Normally people suffering from any
disorder are down. Eucalyptus oil, which is stimulating, removes exhaustion and
mental sluggishness and rejuvenates the spirits of the sick. It is also effective in
treating stress and mental disorders.
Dental Care: Eucalyptus essential oil is very effective against cavities, dental plaques,
gingivitis and other dental infections due to its germicidal properties.
Skin Care: Eucalyptus oil is often applied topically to treat skin infections.
Diabetes: Eucalyptus oil when taken internally controls blood sugar.
Fever: It is also used for treating fever and reducing the body temperature.
Therefore it is also called fever oil.
Intestinal Germs: Eucalyptus oil is a vermifuge and hence is used to remove germs in
the intestine.
Other benefits of eucalyptus oil include the following:
Room Freshener: The antiseptic and deodorant nature of eucalyptus oil makes it a
perfect room freshener for hospitals and sickbed atmosphere. It also kills bacteria
and germs in the air and hence keeps the room environment clean.
Soaps: Eucalyptus oil has applications in soaps, detergents and household cleaners
as well.
Mouth Wash: As mentioned above, the oil is a prime ingredient in many
mouthwashes and toothpastes.
Sauna: Many people add eucalyptus oil to baths, spas and saunas due to its
refreshing and antiseptic effect.
Usage of eucalyptus oil in aromatherapy is increasing gradually as it also blends well
with many other essential oils including thyme essential oil, rosemary essential oil,
marjoram essential oil, lavender essential oil, cedarwood essential oil, frankincense
essential oil, etc.
One should take care while using eucalyptus oil. If taken in large quantities,
eucalyptus oil is toxic. It may also interfere with homeopathic treatments.
Cypress
The health benefits of Cypress Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties like
astringent, anti septic, anti spasmodic, deodorant, diuretic, haemostatic, hepatic,
styptic, sudorific and vasoconstrictor, respiratory tonic and sedative.
The Essential Oils of Cypress are obtained through steam distillation of young twigs,
stems and needles. Cypress, a needle bearing tree of Coniferous-Deciduous regions,
bears a scientific name of Cupressus Sempervirens. The essential oils extracted from
Cypress contain components like Alpha Pinene, Beta Pinene, Alpha Terpinene,
Bornyl Acetate, Carene, Camphene, Cedrol, Cadinene, Sabinene, Myrcene,
Terpinolene and Linalool, which count for its medicinal properties. Although the tree
of Cypress is often linked with death and often found in and around cemeteries, the
Essential Oils obtained from this tree can save you from some really nasty ailments.
Let us have a glimpse of what it has in store for us. Let’s go then.
Astringent: Strengthen your gums and tighten you muscles and abdomen with this
essential oil of Cypress. The main function associated with astringency is
contraction. So Cypress Oil makes your gums, skin, muscles and hair follicles contract
and prevents falling of teeth and hair and loosening of skin and muscles.
Anti Septic: The anti septic properties of Cypress Oil makes it a good application for
external and internal wounds as well as an ingredient of the anti septic lotions and
creams. This is particularly due to presence of Camphene in its Essential Oils.
Anti Spasmodic: Cypress Oil is helpful in curing nearly all types of spasms and
resultant problems. It efficiently relieves spasm in respiratory system, intestines and
muscular spasms in limbs. It also helps cure convulsions, muscle pulls, cramps and
spasmodic cholera which are caused due to spasms.
Deodorant: Cypress Oil has a spicy and masculine fragrance and can easily replace
the synthetic deodorants which boast of a spicy, masculine smell. Not only external
application, but internal consumption too can effectively drive away bad breath and
body odor because the volatile components of this essential oil tend to escape
through all possible openings such as mouth and pores on skin, in the way
eliminating the body odor. It has not side effects either.
Diuretic: Cypress Oil increases urination, both in frequency and in quantity. This is
very important and can be very beneficial for health. With urine, fats are lost from
the body to the extent of 4% of the volume of urine. So, it is but obvious that more
you urinate, the more you lose fat. Then, urination promotes digestion and also does
not let gas form in the intestines as well as removes excess water from the body and
reduces swelling etc. The most important role played by urine is that it removes
toxins from the body. Added to that, it also reduces blood pressure and clean
kidneys. Most of the medicines for lowering blood pressure are based on this benefit
of urination.
Haemostatic & Styptic: Although these two properties are very similar in meaning,
yet they differ a bit. While Haemostatic means an agent that can stop flow of blood
or promotes clotting of blood, Styptic primarily means Astringent, which apart from
having other properties of an astringent, also helps stoppage of blood flow by
contraction of blood vessels. Both of these properties are very important in their
own areas of application. If somebody is bleeding profusely, you need a Haemostatic
to speed up clotting of blood and stop the flow to save his life. Similarly, being an
astringent helps in a different way. It promotes contraction of gums, hair follicles,
muscles, skin and blood vessels, thereby preventing loosening and fall of teeth, hair
fall and flow of blood through vessels. Both of these properties can be life saving.
Hepatic: Cypress Oil is good for liver and it ensures good health of liver by
maintaining proper discharge of bile from it. It also protects liver from infections.
Sudorific: Sudorific is a property by virtue of which a substance can cause sweating
or perspiration. This is nothing to get annoyed at. Actually a good sweating makes
you feel lighter, fit and helps removal of toxins and excess salt and water through
sweat. This cleans the skin pores and openings of sweat and sebum glands and
keeps away acne and other skin diseases. Cypress Oil has good Sudorific properties.
Vasoconstrictor: Cypress Oil causes blood vessels to contract. This can be beneficial
in case of bleeding.
Respiratory Tonic: Cypress Oil tones up the respiratory system and increases
efficiency of lungs. It also helps remove cough and phlegm accumulated in the
respiratory tracts and lungs as well as opens up congestion, making breathing easier
when suffering from cough and cold.
Sedative: It induces a calming, relaxing and sedating effect on the mind and the
body. It relieves nervous stress and anxiety. It also gives a happy feeling in cases of
anger or sadness. This property can be helpful to pacify people who suffered a shock
or setback in life.
Other Benefits: Checks heavy perspiration, heavy menstruations and heavy
bleeding. It can also check water flowing out of eyes. It is anti rheumatic and anti
arthritic and can also be used in treatment of varicose veins, cellulite, asthma,
bronchitis and even diarrhea.
Few Words of Caution: No threats, except that it should be avoided during
pregnancy.
Blending: Cypress Oil forms fine blends with essential oils of all citrus fruits such as
Lime, Lemon and Orange as well as with Bergamot, Clary Sage, Frankincense,
Juniper, Lavender, Marjoram, Pine and Rosemary and Sandalwood essential oils.

essential oil, etc.
Citronella
The health benefits of Citronella Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties like
anti bacterial, anti depressant, anti septic, anti spasmodic, anti inflammatory,
deodorant, diaphoretic, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicidal, insect repellent, stomachic,
stimulant, tonic and vermifuge.
Citronella is a grass that grows in mainly in some Asian countries and some islands of
Asia Pacific. It has a rich, crisp lemony aroma and thus got the name Citronella. The
Essential Oil of Citronella is extracted from two varieties of citronella. The first one is
the Ceylon variety, whose scientific name is Cymbopogon Nardus and the second one
is Java variety, called Cymbopogon Winterianus in botanical terminology. In both the
cases, the essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the fresh plant. While the
first variety yields an oil whose main components are citronellol, citronellal, geraniol,
limonene and methyl isoeugenol, the oil obtained from the second variety contains
citronellal, geraniol, geranyl acetate and limonene as its chief constituents, with
geraniol and citronellal higher in concentrations than the former variety. Hence, the
oil obtained from the Java variety is considered better in quality. The main producers
of this essential oil are China and Indonesia. This oil is also produced by certain other
Asian, South & Latin American and African countries.
Apart from being used as a flavouring agent for foods & beverages, it has varied
medicinal uses, which are listed below.

property of Citronella Essential Oil has many benefits. It disposes waste substances
and toxins from the body, such as uric acid, excess bile and acids, salts etc. as well as
water and fats. This helps reduce weight, drain out infections in the urinary system,
frees the body from toxins, reduce chances of renal calculi, rheumatism and
arthritis, improves digestion and keeps the heart healthy.
Febrifuge: While the diaphoretic property of this oil increases perspiration, anti
inflammatory property reduces inflammation and the anti microbial property fights
infections, the combined effect of these three properties fights fever and reduces
body temperature.

immediate relief in rheumatism and arthritis, particularly in winters when the
symptoms aggravate. It is also effective in removing toxins like uric acid from the
blood, thereby benefiting people suffering from chronic rheumatism and arthritis,
gout etc.
Diaphoretic & Diuretic: Black Pepper oil, when ingested, increases sweating and
urination. Both of these properties play an important role in removal of toxins from
the body, clearing of the pores in skin and also disinfecting the body. Sweating and
urinating help lose extra water and fat from the body, thus reducing weight,
lowering blood pressure and making the body relaxed. These properties are also
helpful in reducing inflammation.
Anti Oxidant: This is yet another beneficial property of Black Pepper oil. It protects
the body from damages done by oxidants (free radicals) and also helps repair them.
It also delays adverse affects of aging such as vision loss, macular degeneration,
wrinkling of skin, degeneration and loosening of muscles, loss in mobility of joints,
nervous disorders, memory loss etc.
Anti Bacterial: It has good anti bacterial properties and that too, without side
effects. It is very effective in curing bacterial infections in mouth, colon, digestive
system, urinary tract etc. It also disinfects food stuffs in which it is added and
protects them from bacterial infections for long.
Other Benefits: Black Pepper oil is rich in certain very useful minerals and vitamins
too. For example, there is vitamin-A (Beta Carotene) in it, which is very beneficial for
ocular health as well as is a very good anti oxidant. It has vitamin-K which is essential
for maintaining proper circulatory and metabolic functions, muscles, bones etc.
Then it has calcium, potassium and selenium. While calcium is good for bones and
potassium for regulating blood pressure, selenium is essentially required for proper
formation of bones, nails, hair, follicles and teeth and for proper functioning of
brain.
Few Words of Caution: As such, there is nothing to be scared about Black Pepper oil,
except that if taken in large quantity, it may cause uneasiness, unrest, vomiting, loose
motions, irritation and inflammation of the intestines, sleeplessness etc. being hot and
pungent. But there is nothing serious about these symptoms.
Blending: Black Pepper Oil can be blended with Lemon, Lime, Lavender, Sage,
Sandalwood, Mandarin, Ylang-Ylang, Juniper, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Clove, Ginger,
Geranium, Coriander, Grapefruit, Fennel and Frankincense Oil.
