Emeralds are often accompanied by
pearls. One such pearl is Ireland’s
East Clare, situated between
Lough Derg, with its renowned
coarse and game fish, water sports
and stunning scenic beauty, and
the Slieve Aughty and Slieve
Bernagh mountain ranges.
Close to Shannon International
Airport with its direct links to America and cheap flights
to Europe, it is also easily approached by main routes from
Rosslare, Dublin, Cork and Belfast. The Atlantic coast and central
Ireland are day trips away and Dublin and the east coast are easily
accessible.

With the 400 kilometre long river Shannon to its right and the
majestic western Atlantic coast to its left, East Clare is a haven of
unspoiled peace and tranquility for those who love solitude. But
those who want a more active holiday will be spoiled for choice
with a wide array of activities on offer and an abundance of pubs
and restaurants where great food and drink can be enjoyed to the
rousing melodies of traditional Irish music. East Clare is famed
angling country with hundreds of well-stocked lakes and rivers and
quiet mountain trails for horse riding and hill walking. There are
also numerous golf courses where the wonderful scenery threatens
to distract the most ardent golfer from his game.

With a wide range of accommodation options - all of the highest
standard - your every comfort is our first priority. Child-minding
can be arranged to allow you a carefree evening of enjoyment.

East Clare is a place of secrets, too. A rich tapestry of folklore,
heritage and historic monuments are everywhere. The
contributions of Milesians and Basques from Spain, Normans from
France and Britain, Palatines, Huguenots, Hungarians and those
who have adopted an alternative lifestyle, make for an interesting,
cosmopolitan community ready to welcome and share with visitors.
There is so much to do here, and all that you need to do to enjoy
this pearl of Europe’s Emerald Isle is visit our web pages or your
travel agent. After one visit you will want to return again and
again to re-live the unique experience that is East Clare. A wild,
wonderful, rugged beauty.

                              FISHING

East Clare, on the western shore of Lough Derg has over 40
lakes and rivers, all surrounded by scenic beauty and peace.
Coarse fishing is the most popular form of angling with
good catches of Bream, Roach, Rudd, Tench , Pike, Perch
and Hybrids. Wild Brown Trout can be found in Lough Derg
and some mountain lakes. The Lower Shannon is famous for
its Salmon beats at Castleconnell. Each town and village has its
own lake or river nearby. No matter where you choose to stay
you are never far from a good fishing venue. Most of the lakes
are well signposted and the signs also give information on the
species of fish found there. Here are just a few of the highlights:

    Lough Derg (Ireland’s Pleasure Lake)
Angling experts have described the waters of Lough Derg as
‘exceedingly rich.’ The largest pike ever recorded anywhere in
the world, 90 lbs, was captured here. The lake offers superb
angling for both trout and coarse fish. The visiting angler,
whether in search of a larger specimen or more modest sized
fish, is guaranteed a memorable experience. Trout in the lake
average around 2 lbs and occasionally reach 20 lbs or more.
Shoals of massive bream roam its depths and big rudd and
tench lurk in the weed beds awaiting the adventurous angler.

    Lough Graney
Lough Graney is one on the largest lakes in East Clare. Its
kidney-shaped 200 acres are set in scenic surroundings flanked
by mountains, rolling hills and rich farmland. Fish stocks: The
lake holds good stocks of pike, an abundance of perch and
    some bream.

          w w w. v i s i t c l a re . n e t

Lough Bridget (Silvergrove)
Lough Bridget is about 50 acres in size and is only one of a
string of lakes which embrace the countryside of East Clare.
Fish stocks: The lake offers particularly good fishing for
tench, and there are good shoals of rudd with some to 2.5
lbs. It also holds good stocks of bream, pike, perch and
hybrids.

Kilgory Lough
Kilgory Lough is set in picturesque surroundings of woodland
and bogland, flanked by heathered hills - the setting exudes
magical isolation. Fish stocks: Kilgory is primarily a bream fish-
ery with good stocks to 6 lbs, and with reasonable stocks of
tench, rudd, hybrids, pike and perch.

Doon Lough
Doon Lough is about 100 acres in size and is located in typi-
cally Irish rural countryside about 3 kms from the village of
Broadford on the road to Sixmilebridge.
Fish stocks: Good stocks of bream to 3 lbs, plus a smaller num-
ber of bigger fish, tench, rudd, roach, perch and good average
size pike.

Doon River (Owenagarny River)
Fish stocks: The kilometre stretch from Doon Lough south west
to the first bridge holds some bream, rudd, roach, hybrids,
perch and pike.

the culture and life of East Clare.
From April to October each year, hurling matches can be viewed

8’s to over 40’s, all of which are very entertaining. Tuangraney
Handball Club has produced three World Champions, the most
recent achieved in 2006.
Rugby and soccer are also played locally with most matches
taking place from September to April.
There are two hunts in East Clare which are active during the
winter months.
