Rugby Academy 2011:

In 2008 a Rugby Academy was started at Takapuna Grammar to provide development support
for boys wishing to focus on their rugby skills in addition to the normal season training and
games.

The Academy is open for boys from all Grades and ages.

The Academy is run by the Head Coach - Mr Grant Simpkins – Student Services and Assistant
Coaches Mr Hayden Viles and Mr Graham Turley.

The TGS Rugby Academy will commence early in 2011. There will be a muster of players first
week back at school, so it is important that all students read the Daily Notices for when the first
meeting takes place.

Training will commence Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th Feb 2011 and will be every Tuesday
and Thursday afternoon from 3-5pm until returning back from a tournament in Rotorua on the
11th April.

NOTE: All coaches and managers are welcome to attend any Academy Coaching session.

All players are welcome to attend trainings sessions but must fill out nomination forms, 28 players
will be selected to represent the school for the Rotorua tournament.

Positions are going to be very competitive so it is important you turn up to every session, all
players will be turned away after the 15 Feb unless new to the school, so it is important to turn up
or make contact with coaches.

Training days may change due to other sport commitments this will be discussed during the pre-
season programme. If you are committed to another sport it is important to play that sport but
please advise the Head Coach.

If you have any queries please communicate with the Head Coach - Mr Grant Simpkins - Student
Services - g.simpkins@takapuna.school.nz,

                                                                                                      5
Rugby Support at the School:
A rugby support committee/group has been formed to assist with the running and development of
rugby within the school. The group is largely informal with the idea that many hands make light
work. Anyone may attend these meetings or join in to provide assistance.

The group focuses on providing support in a number of areas but these will change as the needs
of the school change. These currently include

1) Coach/Manager Selection & Policy Development. Assist with putting coach and manager
resources in place each year. Assisting with developing policy where required in line with school
and NRHU requirements. Coach and Manager selection is at the final discretion of the Teacher in
Charge of Rugby.

2) Player Development and Tracking - Maintaining the school player database and working with
coaches to identify player development and training requirements including technical coaching for
rules changes. The Rugby Academy provides the core pre-season development programme for
player development.

3) Coaches/Managers Committee – This committee comprise the coaches and managers that
meet during the season to track progress and team resource and training needs.

4) Resources – The RSG is responsible for identifying and costing resource requirements for
Rugby at the school and providing fund raising support where additional funding is required.

5) Touring Committee – Responsible for designing and co-ordinating away development tours as
well as any inbound tours of visiting teams to play rugby against the school.

6) Communications – Assisting with co-ordinating information and communication about rugby at
the school.

7) North Harbour Secondary Schools Rugby Committee membership and Liaison.
Undertaken by the Teacher in Charge (TIC) Rugby.

Funding for Rugby at the School:
Rugby at the school is funded by the players. It is a ‘user pays’ system. Annual playing fees are
used to fund all equipment (except player uniforms) and services for Rugby.

                                                         st
The season subscription for players is $110.00 (excl. 1 XV).

A Resources Committee looks at additional resource requirements that are not covered by the
player’s fees. These needs are met from school sport funding allocations (where available),
making specific charitable trust funding requests or through the fund raising activities of the
committee.

Touring foreign teams are often hosted by the school and billeted with players families. Any
funding the school receives from these foreign teams goes directly into resources for rugby at the
school (new equipment, player development initiatives and other rugby projects).

Tours require specific funding and boys involved in those touring squads undertake fund raising
activities to provide funding.

Sponsorship: Financial support for equipment, player or team development or to assist with team
tours would be greatly appreciated. If you think you can assist please contact the TIC or the Chair
of the rugby supporters group.

                                                                                                    7
Communication:
The school website is the first place parents and players should look for general information
about rugby at the school and what is happening during the season. Each week results are
posted on the North Harbour website for all schools. A weekly playing draw is also posted on the
North Harbour website and players and parents can see each week’s game location and time in
advance.

During the season newsletters will also be sent out to players advising them of upcoming events
and information on how the season is progressing. Team managers are responsible for week
to week communication with their teams and players and parents should contact their team
manager in the first instance if they have any queries or concerns.

Registration and Enrolment Night:
It is a good idea for all players to have given some thought to which grade they are likely to be
placed in. Existing and new players can speak to any of the coaches and managers from any
teams to discuss what might be best for them.

An overview of the new season, including and introduction to the team coaches and managers
will be made at the registration night. Dates for training and coach and manager contact details
will be provided to players and parents.

Registration of players is compulsory. All players must be registered on the night (or at a later
date if required for late starters) with the North Harbour Rugby Union. Player information must be
provided to the Union. Only registered NHRU players can be turned out for school teams.

At enrolment night players will need to:
1) Complete a player registration form
2) Be officially weighed
                                           st
3) Pay the rugby playing fee of $85.00 - 1 XV fee will be required to pay extra at a later date
(cash/credit/EFTPOS/cheque please made out to TGS)

Competition Format:
The secondary schools competition we play falls under the control of the North Harbour Rugby
Union. Takapuna Grammar School is represented at the NHRU secondary schools committee by
the Teacher in Charge (TIC) of rugby for the school.

All participating schools are subject to the rules established and governed by NHRU.

There are 17 secondary schools (with close to 100 teams) within the North Harbour region and 14
of these schools enter sides in the competition. Due to the ratio of secondary schools to rugby
clubs there is often a strong relationship between clubs and schools.

                                                                                                    9
Weights and Grades:
Where possible the school will try and establish a team for every grade in the competition. This
will be dependent on player numbers in the school.

The ages and weights are taken from the player registration and enrolment night in March. This
sets the players eligibility for age and weight restricted grades for the duration of the season.

Once the numbers of players that are available for each grade have been established, training
squads for each grade will be formed and then placed into teams by the coaches and managers.

Representative Teams and Player Development:
Coaches and team managers will work with individual players to determine their training needs
for fitness and skills. Specialist coaches and advisers may be brought in during the season to
assist with particular aspects of player and team development.

Players from all grades may be eligible for nomination by their coaches each year to trial for
representative positions with North Harbour combined school teams.

Being a Coach, Assistant Coach or Team Manager:
Coaching and team management positions are voluntary roles normally provided by parents of
students, older students, teachers and volunteers.

Each year at the end of the season, the Coach/Manager selection committee will seek an interest

Anyone is able to put their name forward (and we encourage interest parents to do so) for a
coaching and manager role. Selection is based on merit. Applications may be asked to be in
writing. Where they determine, school management has veto regarding the appointment or
removal of any coach or manager position.

If you are interested in being a coach or manager, or would just like to find out more about it.
Please contact the Teacher in Charge of Rugby.

Role of Coaches:
The primary role of the coach is to oversee the development of the players and the team to
enable them to compete with enjoyment and pride.

Being involved in team sports is formative for boys and coaches need to ensure they can bring
out a balance of competitive desire matched with appropriate behavioral values.

Time on the field is important to the enjoyment of the game for the boys and will also encourage
participation in rugby at the school.

Coaches will need to establish a training program with their team setting training dates and times
as well as being organized in advance to run each training session.

Coaches should ensure they have at least a team manager in support and may appoint assistant
coaches or technical support as they require.

Resources are available to support coaches at the school and any requirements should be
discussed with the TIC of rugby.

Role of Managers:
The primary role of managers is to provide support to the coach. The coach needs to be freed up
from as much team management as possible to enable them to focus on coaching.

Some of the tasks managers should include:

 Keep and maintain player contact details
                                                                                                        11
 Organise all communications with the team members and ensure players know each
week what they are doing and where they need to be.
 Handing out and recovering jerseys from the boys each Saturday. Jerseys need to be
taken to the school appointed dry cleaners for washing – check with the TIC.
 Ensuring players have transport to the game
 Ensuring all players have appropriate playing kit and are turned out in full kit each week
to play – Players without mouth-guards cannot practice or play
 Being custodian of the team kit bag and also ensure spares of mouthguards, studs,
strapping tape as well as first-aid kits are available. Taking a chilly bin of ice each week
for injuries is also a very good idea.
 Preparing (where required at TGS) the field before play and ensure equipment is
returned to the lock-ups at the end of training or if the last team to use the field for a
        game.
 Preparing a team sheet for the game each week, recording game scores and obtaining
        referee sign-off.
 Sending team results at the end of the game to the TIC of rugby as well as team sheets
each week to the TIC for sending to North Harbour Rugby.
 Filing serious injury report with the school and North Habour Rugby

                                                                                                     12
Player and Supporters Behavior:
The coach and manager are responsible for managing the on-field and off-field behaviour of their
players and their supporters. While good natured and competitive support is appreciated this
needs to be managed.

Where players engage in inappropriate behaviour, the coach and manager should remove them
from play and report them to the TIC rugby.

Serious misconduct by a player on the field would normally be cited by the referee and the player
and team manager be required to attend a North Harbour disciplinary committee hearing.

Where TGS supporter(s) behaviour becomes inappropriate, the manager and or coach should in
the first instance speak with them and then if necessary report their behaviour to the TIC rugby.

The behaviour of players and supporters of the opposing team is the responsibility of that team’s
management. Any concerns about opposing team behaviour should be reported to the TIC rugby.

Players Uniform and Kit:
 Jerseys (numbered) are provided by the school for players. Jersey’s are collected by the
manager of each team for the season. The manager is responsible for handing out and
recovering team jerseys. Missing jerseys are the responsibility of the team to replace.
 Managers will hand-out then recover jerseys each Saturday. Jerseys need to be taken to
the school appointed dry cleaners for washing – check with the TIC.
 Boys should provide their own practice jersey to wear to practice.
 Players can purchase own shorts (black) and socks (blue) from the uniform shop.

Mouth Guards:
Mouth guards must be worn by all boys at all times when practicing and playing. Boys are
responsible for providing their own mouthguards. For those looking to have their mouthguards
professionally fitted, a fitting service is available from:

session.

It is the responsibility of the team manager who is first on the day to be using a field to set up the

back into the Rugby lock-up sheds.

Field kit includes:

Injury Management:
Coaches and Managers are encouraged to undertake the St John Ambulance Course in first aid
management.

Coaches and Managers need to ensure their players are fit from injury to begin or continue play.

Serious injuries need to be reported to the Teacher in Charge of rugby and also a serious injury
form needs to be completed and sent to the NHRU.

Managers must ensure any injured player receives adequate medical attention and must remain
in assistance to the player until they are discharged into professional medical help (or to the
player’s parents).

Concussed players are automatically stood down for 3 weeks unless they have clearance from a
medical specialist. Concussed players must also see a medical specialist before coming back to
play.

Hosting Visiting Teams:
Takapuna Grammar has a history of hosting visiting teams after games. This is normally limited to
those teams that have traveled some distance to play including Orewa & Mahurangi teams and
parents. Team managers can host visiting teams in the Bert Sutcliffe Lounge. They should
contact the opposing team manager before the game and advise them if they we intend to host
them.

Managers need to:
 Advise the Teacher in Charge that you will be hosting –when and time.
 Check there are no other functions planned.
 Arrange for the lounge to be opened by the caretaker or the Teacher in Charge.
 Ask parents and players to bring a plate of food and drinks.
 Supply tea, coffee, sugar and milk.
 Tea and coffee making facilities are available in the lounge.
 Clean the lounge and all remove rubbish from the lounge.
 The hosting team captain normally welcomes the visiting team and thanks the parents for
        supplying the food.
 The visiting team captain normally responds.

                                                                                                  15

1) First XV Squad. Each year the 1 XV squad may undertake a playing tour. This tour is usually
                                                                          st
undertaken at the end of the second term (mid July). More recently the 1 XV squad attended the
Southern Skies Tournament in Queensland. This was a 1 week tour with the boys playing round
robin games against attending sides. TGS had good success winning 4 out of 5 games.

Players are responsible for paying their own way for the tour and each year a series of fund
raisers is undertaken by the boys and their parents to assist with this. (note: next Southern Skies
Tour will be in 2012)

2) Development Team. A development team is also formed from outstanding players in other
grades. This squad trains with the TIC of rugby to play against teams touring to TGS during the
season. The squad usually undertakes a tour (2 - 3 days) within the North Island to play other
schools.

Photos & Prize Giving:
Each year team photos are taken at the school. Players will be advised by newsletter from the
school. Full player kit must be worn and otherwise players will be excluded from the photo.

A Prize Giving evening is held in mid September at the close of the season each year. This
normally takes place at the North Shore Rugby Club. All players and parents are invited to attend.

Trophies and prizes are awarded to those players in each team that are either outstanding, show
the greatest improvement or greatest merit. There are also a number of other awards.

The trophies issued on the night are perpetual trophies and should be returned by winners to the
TIC rugby before the end of the next season.
