Paper industry rules may change

By John Dipko

Press-Gazette Madison bureau jdipko@greenbaypressgazette.com

MADISON - The state Department of Natural Resources will review all areas for cost

savings and potential cuts, even innovative approaches to regulate the paper industry,

department Deputy Secretary William Smith said Wednesday.

Science Museum constructs building that makes its own energy

The Science Museum of Minnesota today announced that construction is underway on

the Environmental Experiment Center (EEC). This four-season, 1,000-square-foot

building located in its 1.2-acre outdoor Science Park will serve as the operations center

for the museum's outdoor Science Park and will have the flexibility to serve as a

classroom, public laboratory, exhibit area, or a special events space depending on the

need at any given time. EEC construction is anticipated to be complete in time for Earth

Day, April 22, 2003.

Although much attention is focused on the EEC's energy features, the building will

include other environmental attributes. Forest Stewardship Council-certified lumber was

provided at a discount by L S Black Constructors and Certified Wood, Inc. of

Minnetonka. "The interior fixtures and furniture of the EEC are still to be decided," said

Hamilton. "The Science Museum is still seeking ideas for how items, such as cabinets,

tables, and countertops, can tell environmental stories.

Feds unwilling to make equal land swap with state

A formal appraisal has set the value of state-owned lands within the federal Boundary

Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at about $92 million, but that doesn't mean the land will

be sold any time soon.

Missota Paper to buy Brainerd paper mill

BRAINERD, Minn. - Missota Paper Co. plans to purchase the Potlatch paper mill for $5

million and produce high-grade uncoated paper for niche markets.

----------------------------------

Fundy Model Forest working with Landowners in Large-Scale Conservation Planning

Woodlot owners, even those in the same area, frequently manage their forest land in

isolation from one another, each with their own individual objectives. The fragmented

nature of land ownership has been considered a barrier to the achievement of biodiversity

conservation on small private woodlots.

March 20, 2003, St. Paul, MN

The Canadian Consulate General in Minneapolis, in partnership with the University of

Minnesota, College of Natural Resources, will hold a one-day conference on March 20,

2003, to address comparative Canadian/U.S. forest management practices. Sessions will

Pilot Project connects Nova Scotia Woodland Owners to Information Highway

Bringing woodlot owners together under one roof in Nova Scotia has always been a

challenge. On November 21, 2002, the Nova Forest Alliance (NFA) announced the

Woodlot Info Shop (WISh). This new pilot project creates the opportunity for technical

and operational experts to work with woodland owners to assemble up-to-date

information for landowners. The Woodlot Info Shop will bring current and evolving

woodlot information to one place - a first stop for all woodlot information. It is the

interface between Nova Scotia's vast population of woodlot owners and the many

associations working to provide them with information and services.

Balancing Ecology and Economics: A Start-up Guide for Forest Owner Cooperation

To help address some of the challenges faced by private woodland owners, the University

of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives (UWCC), Cooperative Development Services

(CDS) and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy's Community Forestry Resource

Center (CFRC) have published, Balancing Ecology and Economics: A Start-up Guide for

Forest Owner Cooperation. The 160-page guide is intended to show how private

landowners, working together, can improve the ecological conditions of their lands while

at the same time improving their own economic well-being and that of the communities

in which their forest land is located.

The guide draws upon the experiences of several established or forming sustainable

forestry co-ops, as well as the experience of CDS, UWCC, and CFRC of IATP. Intended

primarily for landowners and resource managers, the guide provides essential information

on all aspects of establishing a forest owner cooperative, including:

* forest management,

* marketing,

* business planning,

* co-op governance,

* cooperative structures,

* non-timber forest products,

* sustainable certification,

* developing member education programs, and more.

The cost of the manual is $13, plus sales tax for Minnesota residents.
