Dear 5th Grade Students,

Enclosed within this TOP SECRET INFORMATION packet is a planning template

that will guide you and your group members in solving the mystery. After speaking with

several other teachers, our class was the only class that received this postcard. The mystery

man from the Middle East must have sent us this postcard for a reason! I believe it is because

we have gained enough knowledge on the Western Hemisphere that is needed to answer the

question. Struggles for independence exist and have existed all over the world. How can we

connect the struggles in the Western Hemisphere to the current struggles for independence in

the Middle East? Now it is up to you and your group members to solve the mystery.

Open up those filing cabinets and dig for the information!

Help this mystery man solve this mystery!

Don’t forget to keep in mind, the information has been provided but it is the answer that you

                                       will need to find…

“Are the independence struggles in the Western Hemisphere are similar to the current

independence struggles in the Middle East?”
“Are the independence struggles in the Western Hemisphere are
similar to the current independence struggles in the Middle East?”
Revolutions have spread throughout history,, all around the world. After the
American Revolution, Latin and South America soon faced the same struggles for
independence. Today, we find the idea of revolution spreading in the Middle East?
Are these events the same or different? Compare reasons and events to answer the
question for the mystery man. Please do accurate research as your answer is really
important to our mystery man

Is the idea of liberty and personal freedom like a virus that spreads
                                between countries?

“How do democratic governments deal when a government acts in a
                       way that is unfair?
In what ways does the United States and Canada deal with situations in
which the government acts unfairly? How would Canada check the power of a
ruthless leader? How would the United States check the power of a government
that was unfair? What is ultimate check each country has on its leaders?
Why do Revolutions happen in dictatorships and not democracies?

“Are all Revolutions in the Western Hemisphere violent?”
Were all the changes in this hemisphere violent? If you can find one that is
not violent, why was it not violent? How would you advise dictatorships in our
hemisphere and the Middle East to prevent violent revolutions?
                 How do democracies avoid Revolutions?
