Description

"Arne Duncan Receives Second Sponsorship Award," September 2, 2006

Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer, Arne Duncan, received his second sponsorship award from the Save A
Life Foundation (SALF). The award is but a small token in recognition of Duncan’s faithful support over the years and
modest display of SALF’s deep appreciation of Mr. Duncan’s commitment to saving lives.

Duncan was moved by SALF’s efforts to train 67,000 schoolchildren under his command stating, “I really appreciate
the skills SALF is teaching the students Of Chicago.” Duncan holds SALF’s Founder and CEO, Carol Spizzirri in the
highest regard, stating, “Carol is one of my heroes.” Duncan elaborates, “I really appreciate the partnership. We’re
trying to create more opportunities [for the students] to learn skills to save a life at some point”. Duncan acknowledges the impact SALF’s training has on the children saying, “It’s a real sense of empowerment they wouldn’t have otherwise. I really appreciate the skills SALF is teaching the students of Chicago.”

Duncan identifies his partnership with SALF as being long standing. Spizzirri first met Duncan while he was under the
leadership of Paul Vallas, previous CEO of Chicago Public Schools and current CEO of Philadelphia Public Schools.
Referencing Spizzirri’s tragedy whereas her daughter bled to death while waiting 30 minutes for an ambulance because
none of the bystanders were trained in basic first aid, including the police, Duncan comments, “I was really moved by
the fact of what she had been through and not wanting it to happen to anyone.”

Referencing SALF’s expanding statewide presence, Duncan remarks, “It’s really fun to watch the growth nationally. It’s
a remarkable growth in a really short period of time.” Duncan and SALF look to “train thousands of our students,” says
Duncan.
