Zomato bounces off the Indian group buying bandwagon, 1 day after
announcing the launch of Zodeals.com
New Delhi, 2 April, 2011: Zomato.com (previously known as Foodiebay.com), one
of India’s largest food portals and the only menu-pages website had launched its
group deals portal Zodeals.com on 1st of April. However, just one day after
announcing the launch, they have now announced the shutting down of
Zodeals.com. Anonymous sources suggest that this could be because the concept
was not so awesome after all given the number of such sites mushrooming in India.
An enthusiastic smart analyst from Gurgaon, who did not want to be named,
however pointed that he had guessed the move yesterday itself. “Once I saw ‘Share
the deal love and earn $10’, a press release in .docx and Loren Ipsum as text on
Zodeals.com, I was 99% pretty sure it was unreal. That and it was April 1
ofcourse…hehe…but Go Zo!! Yeah!” he said.
Zomato is now more than 2 years old and gets more than 300,000 monthly users
across 7 cities in India –Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata and
Hyderabad. Zodeals.com was the latest move by Zomato to further strengthen their
core offering – no more though from the looks of it. Zomato recently raised an
investment of 4.7Cr from Info Edge, one of the largest internet companies in India,
to fund its product development and marketing.
Deepinder Goyal, CEO at Zomato or any of the Zomato employees, were not
available for comment on this matter. We did hear that they were too engrossed
preparing to watch India lift the World Cup!
Zomato.com (previously Foodiebay.com) was launched in July 2008 by IIT Delhi
graduates and is an online food guide and restaurant directory. Zomato lists menus,
ratings, photos and contact details of restaurants and also offers discount coupons
to customers. It is currently one of the largest food portals in the country and lists
more than 12,000 restaurants across 7 cities in the country –Delhi NCR, Mumbai,
Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Hyderabad. Info Edge (Naukri.com group)
invested in Zomato in August 2010 for expansion and product development.
Zomato provides menu cards, contact details, rating and reviews of all listed
restaurants to its users. Value added offerings like discounts, restaurant pictures, etc
are also offered for select restaurants across cities. Zomato is headquartered in DLF
Phase 2, Gurgaon and currently employs 45 people across 7 cities in India.
