NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation
Course Length 3‐5 Hours (Depends on how much time spent at range)
General description Try to arrive at the class facility at least 15 minutes ahead of time. Once
you have arrived, please leave any firearms or ammunition you plan to
use in your car. Proceed to the check in area in the classroom for
registration. We will begin class promptly at the scheduled time. There
will be a 10 minute break at least every hour of class time. Once the
classroom time has been completed, we will proceed to the range for the
shooting activities. When we get to the range, please bring your
firearms, ammunition and accessories to the range check in area. A
range officer will look over your equipment and tell you where to wait for
the rest of the student. Remember, have fun and be safe!
Lunch This class usually ends around lunch time, so no sack lunch is required.
However, if you need a snack to tide you over during the 4 hours this
class takes to complete, please bring one. Water and soft drinks are
available at the classroom. Water will be provided at the range.
Clothing 1. Cap with a brim (such as a ball cap)
2. Closed toe shoes (no sandals)
3. Eye Protection
4. Ear Protection (over the ear muff type)
5. Long pants preferred, but shorts will be allowed
6. Sun Screen is recommended
7. Dress comfortably
Firearm We recommend bringing your own firearm if you have one (leave it in the
car during class). A .22 caliber is great for the class; however, if you have
a larger caliber pistol you would like to bring and shoot you may do so. If
you do not have a pistol, or you do not have one you want to use for this
class, we will let you use one of our range pistols.
Ammunition Bring a box (50 rounds) of factory new ammunition designed for the
pistol you are bringing. If you are going to use one of our firearms, you
can purchase a box of ammunition at the range. We will have .22 and
9mm ammunition available at the range. If you need to buy other caliber
ammunition, it can be found at our ProShop.
There will be water provided in the classroom and at the range. If you do not have hearing
protection or eye protection, we will furnish these items for you. We also have these and many
other items available for sale at our ProShop. If you plan on continuing your shooting
development you may want to have your own gear.
