Welcome to

Greenwood Wesleyan

Church.

Please standby for the

following

announcements.

Happy Mother’s Day! There is

no church tonight.

On Sunday, May 16, we will

have our annual meeting of

the Local Church Conference,

immediately following the AM

service. During that time, we

will elect officers for the

following year. Covenant and

community members are

eligible to vote.

After nearly two years of

battling leukemia, Jim Kerr will

be joining us for a special

service on May 23rd. It will be

a great time of singing and

hearing a strong testimony of

God’s faithfulness.

A bridal shower will be held

for Casey Reynolds on

Wednesday, May 26th at 7:00

in the church fellowship hall.

All women of the church are

invited.

We have decided to make a

major change to our lineup of

services. We are suspending

Wednesday night church

indefinitely. In the coming

weeks, we will begin a

transition from a formal

service to flexible and more

intimate small group meetings

to try to facilitate a diverse set

of needs in our church.

We could use more help with

lawn care. If you are

interested in helping out,

please sign up or see Tony.

The more people we have, the

less frequently people have to

cut.

Some tweaks to the website

www.greenwoodwesleyan.com

have been made. It is now

possible to download

sermons, bulletins, and

PowerPoint presentations, as

well as check out the latest

photos of our church in Nepal.

A new Facebook page, titled

“Friends of Greenwood

Wesleyan Church” has been

created. It is a webpage that

can be seen or edited by

anybody. Send a request to

join the page, and you can

post prayer requests, photos,

or anything you want.

Proverbs 1:1-7

1 The proverbs of Solomon

son of David, king of

Israel: 2 for attaining

wisdom and discipline;

for understanding

words of insight; 3 for

acquiring a disciplined

and prudent life, doing

what is right and just and

fair;

Proverbs 1:1-7

4 for giving prudence to the

simple, knowledge and

discretion to the young- 5 let

the wise listen and add to

their learning, and let the

discerning get guidance- 6

for understanding proverbs

and parables, the sayings and

riddles of the wise. 7 The

fear of the LORD is the

beginning of knowledge, but

fools despise wisdom and

discipline.

Better is One Day

How lovely is your

dwelling place,

O Lord Almighty

For my soul longs and

even faints for You.

For here my heart is

satisfied within Your

presence.

I sing beneath the shadow

of Your wings.

Better is one day in Your

courts.

Better is one day in Your

house.

Better is one day in Your

courts

Than thousands

elsewhere.

Better is one day in Your

courts.

Better is one day in Your

house.

Better is one day in Your

courts

Than thousands

elsewhere.

One thing I’d ask that I

would seek;

To see Your beauty.

To find You in the place

Your glory dwells.

Better is one day in Your

courts.

Better is one day in Your

house.

Better is one day in Your

courts

Than thousands

elsewhere.

Better is one day in Your

courts.

Better is one day in Your

house.

Better is one day in Your

courts

Than thousands

elsewhere.

My heart and flesh cry out

to You the living God.

Your Spirit’s water for my

soul.

I’ve tasted and I’ve seen.

Draw once again to me.

I will draw near to You.

I will draw near to You.

Better is one day in Your

courts.

Better is one day in Your

Better is one day in Your

Requests for Prayer

In His Time

Song #472

In His time, in His time;

He makes all things beautiful

in His time.

Lord, please show me everyday,

as You’re teaching me your way,

that You do just what You say

in your time.

In your time, in your time;

You make all things beautiful

in your time.

Lord, my life to You I bring;

May each song I have

to sing be to You

a lovely thing in your time

1 Samuel 28:1-25

Milestone #4

“You Don’t Forget to Talk to

Your Momma”

The Wise Mother

• Teenagers go through a rebellious

phase.

• Moms have an uncanny ability

to sniff out the fishy stuff.

• Parents do understand!

• Moms want their children to

benefit from the wisdom they

have.

• We should talk to our moms.

• We should also consult God.

1 Samuel 28:1-15

1 In those days the Philistines

gathered their forces to fight

against Israel. Achish said to

David, "You must understand

that you and your men will

accompany me in the army." 2

David said, "Then you will see for

yourself what your servant can

do." Achish replied, "Very well, I

will make you my bodyguard for

life."

1 Samuel 28:1-15

3 Now Samuel was dead, and all

Israel had mourned for him and

buried him in his own town of

Ramah. Saul had expelled the

mediums and spiritists from the

land. 4 The Philistines assembled

and came and set up camp at

Shunem, while Saul gathered all

the Israelites and set up camp at

Gilboa.

1 Samuel 28:1-15

5 When Saul saw the Philistine

army, he was afraid; terror filled

his heart. 6 He inquired of the

LORD, but the LORD did not

answer him by dreams or Urim or

prophets. 7 Saul then said to his

attendants, "Find me a woman

who is a medium, so I may go

and inquire of her."

1 Samuel 28:1-15

"There is one in Endor," they said.

8 So Saul disguised himself,

putting on other clothes, and at

night he and two men went to the

woman. "Consult a spirit for me,"

he said, "and bring up for me the

one I name."

1 Samuel 28:1-15

9 But the woman said to him,

"Surely you know what Saul has

done. He has cut off the mediums

and spiritists from the land. Why

have you set a trap for my life to

bring about my death?" 10 Saul

swore to her by the LORD, "As

surely as the LORD lives, you

will not be punished for this." 11

Then the woman asked, "Whom

shall I bring up for you?" "Bring

up Samuel," he said.

1 Samuel 28:1-15

12 When the woman saw Samuel,

she cried out at the top of her voice

and said to Saul, "Why have you

deceived me? You are Saul!" 13 The

king said to her, "Don't be afraid.

What do you see?" The woman

said, "I see a spirit coming up out

of the ground." 14 "What does he

look like?" he asked.

1 Samuel 28:1-15

"An old man wearing a robe is

coming up," she said. Then Saul

knew it was Samuel, and he

bowed down and prostrated

himself with his face to the

ground. 15 Samuel said to Saul,

"Why have you disturbed me by

bringing me up?" "I am in great

distress," Saul said.

1 Samuel 28:1-15

"The Philistines are fighting

against me, and God has turned

away from me. He no longer

answers me, either by prophets or

by dreams. So I have called on

you to tell me what to do.“ 16

Samuel said, "Why do you

consult me, now that the LORD

has turned away from you and

become your enemy?

1 Samuel 28:1-15

17 The LORD has done what he

predicted through me. The LORD

has torn the kingdom out of your

hands and given it to one of your

neighbors—to David. 18 Because

you did not obey the LORD or

carry out his fierce wrath against

the Amalekites, the LORD has

done this to you today.

1 Samuel 28:1-15

19 The LORD will hand over both

Israel and you to the Philistines,

and tomorrow you and your sons

will be with me. The LORD will

also hand over the army of Israel

to the Philistines." 20 Immediately

Saul fell full length on the

ground, filled with fear because of

Samuel's words. His strength was

gone, for he had eaten nothing all

that day and night.

1 Samuel 28:1-15

21When the woman came to Saul

and saw that he was greatly

shaken, she said, "Look, your

maidservant has obeyed you. I

took my life in my hands and

did what you told me to do. 22

Now please listen to your servant

and let me give you some food so

you may eat and have the

strength to go on your way."

1 Samuel 28:1-15

23 He refused and said, "I will not

eat." But his men joined the

woman in urging him, and he

listened to them. He got up from

the ground and sat on the couch.

24 The woman had a fattened calf

at the house, which she butchered

at once. She took some flour,

kneaded it and baked bread

without yeast. 25 Then she set it

before Saul and his men, and

they ate. That same night they

got up and left.

This Series

• We are looking at ways to judge

the quality of your faith.

• Strong Christians naturally

manifest things on this list.

• Your virtue brings God glory.

• You bring unity.

• You are a good example.

• Today: You go to the right places

for wisdom.

Saul

• He is the King of Israel.

• He was chosen for his physical

stature.

• He did not do as the Lord

commanded.

• He was rejected as king.

• He was not wise.

Problems

• Two people in the passage Do have

wisdom.

• Samuel, but he is dead.

• David, but Saul despises him.

• David is now grouped with Israel’s

enemy, the Philistines.

• Saul is alone with no solid

guidance.

More Problems

• The Philistine army is

approaching.

• They are a bunch of pillaging

raiders.

• We are told more than once that

Saul is afraid of the Philistines,

and this story is no different.

The Biggest Problem

• God won’t hear him.

• Is that mean of God?

• Saul had been rejected as king, so

God doesn’t recognize his status.

• His inquiry was insincere.

• A big, scary army is around and

Saul has nobody to turn to for

help.

A Strange Choice

• For help, Saul chooses…

• SAMUEL! But isn’t he dead?

• This is shocking as it was

strictly forbidden.

• He consults a necromancer.

• I’m not sure what really happened

with the ghost, but it was

unusual nevertheless.

• Seeking the advice of a medium

showed how far Saul had fallen.

Boiling it Down

• Saul’s relationship with God was

so bad that he couldn’t consult

God for help.

• Instead, he seeks the aid of

somebody that he was strictly

forbidden from seeing.

What this means for us:

• We are talking about ways to judge

the quality of our faith.

• If we have strong faith, we seek out

godly sources for wisdom.

• This story brings together a long

history of Saul not talking to the

Lord.

• His spiritual life was so dead he

couldn’t consult God.

• If we don’t seek God now, it will bring

us to a place where we can’t later.

Another way of putting

this:

• Seeking God is a habit.

• It begins with an intentional

decision.

• When we ignore the right thing, it

gets harder to do it in the future.

• You’ll never know what the right

thing is until you ask.

A Hard Thing to See

• This is frustrating to see as a

pastor.

• I’m here to point you in the right

direction.

• It’s hard to see somebody make a

big mistake when I could have

helped them.

• If you won’t seek Him now, do

you really think you’ll be able to

when you really goof up?

Milestones

• Successful Christians inquire of

the Lord.

• It is hard.

• How will you know the right

thing to do unless you sit down

and talk to people who know?

• This culture will provide you with

lots of what it calls wisdom.

• Ignore them and seek the Lord.
