Smooth Riding Post Edition No. 3 On-Car Brake Lathe News www.procuteurope.com march 2009 New OwNers Take Over PrO-CuT aNd Haweka (uk) LTd Two entrepreneurs have taken over the Pro-Cut Europe and Haweka (UK )Ltd. Peter Spraggs and John Pullin, Managing Director and Commercial Director respectively, took control of the company at the end of September 2008. Peter and John were previously part of the Senior Management team in charge of the successful Barnes Group. After enjoying the growth of Barnes and establishing their position in the consumables market, Peter and John saw an opportunity to further develop both Pro-Cut and Haweka in the UK market. Peter said “We were looking for a well set up, dynamic company within a growth market and Haweka (UK) Ltd met these requirements. Guy and Dave have done a brilliant job over the last 10 years and we hope to continue this growth and establish Pro-Cut and Haweka as No 1 in the market.” Guy Carter commented “Dave and I will help Peter and John for as long as they need it to ensure our customers receive the service they have come to expect. We have enjoyed launching the Pro-Cut brake lathe in Europe and working with the worlds leading manufacturers but all journeys must end. We wish Peter and John luck in their new endeavour and look forward to seeing brake lathes as car owners rather than technicians now.” Peter and John both have engineering backgrounds and between them have nearly 20 years experience in the motor industry. Their combined knowledge and experience gained in previous roles have left them with a skill set suited to taking both companies to the next level. John will predominantly concentrate on building the Haweka business in the UK whilst Peter will continue to develop Pro-Cut in Europe and Africa. TeCH TaLk TOP TiPs wiTH MasTer TeCHNiCiaN - wayNe sTarkey Question: Why do i get shadoWs When skimming cross drilled discs? The first rule when resurfacing cross drilled discs is to make sure you do one side at a time. The first cut should always be a rough one to ensure the best finish possible. The shadows referred to in the question develop on the disc when the tips are set for a deep cut. When skimming cross drilled discs the tips should be set at a 4” maximum. Any deeper and the cutting heads will jump when crossing the holes causing the shadow pattern. The shadows won’t show straight away but once the car has been driven for 10-20 miles they will become noticeable. Remember the golden rules when resurfacing cross drilled discs: 1) Cut one side at a time 2) Do a rough cut on each side 3) Never set the cutting tips above 4” If you are experiencing any technical problems please call the Pro-Cut Master Technicians for assistance. Declan invested in a ProCut On-Car brake lathe in July 2008. In the past 6 months Declan has skimmed over 500 brake discs on everything from Subaru Impreza’s to BMW X5’s and race day cars. He tells us why he bought a Pro-Cut brake lathe and what it has done for his business. Pro-Cut: Why did you decide to buy a Pro-Cut On-Car brake lathe? Declan McCormack: To save customers money, bring in more business and use down the track on race cars suffering from warped discs. PC: How often do you use the brake lathe? DM: I’m near the end of my third box of tips (equivalent to 600 skims) in just over 6 months but don’t use it as much I’d like to. It took a while to get going but once I started advertising the lathe, word got round and once I put some information on the website, the business started coming in. I use it a lot on 4x4’s and high end vehicles that may have specialist discs which are difficult to match, or when rear discs are suffering from corrosion problems around MOT time. I don’t use it that much on the smaller stuff when the discs are so cheap. It’s brilliant on Impreza’s and 4x4’s with rusty discs or vehicles suffering from vibrations. I had an X5 in recently which was suffering from steering wheel vibration after having new discs put on in a dealership. The lathe matched the discs to the hub and solved the problem quickly and efficiently. PC: Are customers happy with the service? DM: Yes they are. I’ve had no problems with any of the discs I’ve skimmed. In fact I had a Laguna in recently with corroded back discs which was going to fail the MOT, I quoted the customer a price for new discs and a price for skimming – he was happy I could offer him the lower price due to skimming and we got the business. It’s a real no brainer for customers with high end cars and the results are always good. PC: Has it led to a decrease in your disc orders then? DM: No, it has not affected disc or pad sales. If the discs are below minimum thickness I replace them and if they can be skimmed I offer it to the customer. If anything the brake lathe has led to an increase in sales because customers know I can offer more options. Identifying potential problems, communicating them to the customer and positive action to curtail them will stop those expensive surprises that most car drivers experience at some point. An on-car brake lathe is the perfect option for both the workshop and the customer. During MOT’s the brake discs are checked to ensure braking efficiency meets VOSA standards. Rear discs on cars often corrode before they wear out and are replaced prematurely. Workshops that do this are missing out on extra potential labour opportunities. The Pro-Cut PFM on-car brake lathe can skim discs in 9 minutes (18 minutes per axle) automatically whilst the technician fits pads. If customers are advised that skimming the rear discs is good preventative maintenance and would stop the need to prematurely replace the discs potentially saving them a substantial amount of money then they are likely to agree to it. The workshop charges £40 per axle for 18 minutes work equating to an extra £130 in labour per hour for MOT’s on top of what is already being charged for minimal extra effort. The customer receives brand new brake performance, minimal bedding in time and good customer service. The customer will return due to the good service experience for the next MOT. The brand new facilities contain a state-of-the-art commercial vehicle MOT bay, lecture room and communal area. No longer does wheel alignment for trucks need to be a long drawn-out and complicated affair. This new facility provides a perfect platform for Haweka to train UK commercial workshop technicians on the next generation of wheel alignment systems, the TA-20. Located at Richard Read Transport’s Longhope depot, the new training centre has everything the Haweka Master Technicians need to take wheel alignment novices through to expert level. Balancing Accessory News www.haweka.co.uk Edition No. 3 MArch 2009 Haweka aLigN THeir kNOwLedge wiTH CusTOMers The new training centre gives Haweka the resources to keep offering tailor made courses to customers nationwide. The lecture room contains the modern facilities needed to communicate the theoretical side of wheel alignment and how to provide optimum logistical angles reducing tyre wear and fuel consumption to customers. The communal area, overlooking one of the workshops, is spacious and comfortable allowing course attendees to discuss the theory between themselves and relax during breaks. The TA-20 is the new generation of wheel aligners and can measure a 2-axle semi-trailer tractor in 10 minutes flat. The unique magnetic clamp leaves no need for compensation and the system measures the front toe, individual toe, camber toe-out on turns, turning radius, castor, kingpin inclination angle, angular tilt of axles, thrust angle and axle offset simply and easily. Traditional wheel alignment systems have problems with twin steering axles and often need extra time it takes to allow for remeasurement and compensation. The new TA20 can quickly measure and adjust the twin steering axles one after the other when equipped with two additional turning plates. The new system can align cars, light trucks, heavy trucks, buses, tractors, farm tractors, cranes, earth moving vehicles and more. The TA-20 offers the choice between measuring from axle to axle or from the axle to the chassis to ensure it is able to fulfil requirements both today and tomorrow. Peter Spraggs, Director of Haweka UK said “The new facility Richard Read has built is state-of-the art and he has spared no expense. The added bonus of the site is that we have access to their fleet and the different vehicles in it. I am very happy that we can continue our accredited training programmes and offer current and future customers the opportunity to become expert wheel alignment technicians. I know that customers will enjoy the experience here and leave able to offer their customers a greener more profitable If you have any questions about your balancing accessories or require more information on any of the articles in the newsletter please contact the Haweka Team on: Tel: 01242 621 001 Fax: 01242 620 558 Email: John.Pullin@haweka.co.uk Smooth Riding Post Technology for smooth riding vehicles Price List Balancing Accessory News www.haweka.co.uk Edition No. 3 march 2009 New PriCe LisT FOr 2009 Even the UK’s No 1 Supplier of wheel balancing adaptors and accessories is making some changes due to the credit crunch.
