Homework Tips for Students and Parents

STUDENTS:
• Find a spot at home with few distractions for productive studying. The more
distractions – the longer it is going to take.
• Make sure you have all the needed supplies; sharpened pencils, erasers, pens,
colored pencils and markers, extra lined/graphed paper, a calculator, ruler and
dictionary.
• Use your planner. Block out time each day when you are going to get your homework
done. Make sure to plan ahead for long term assignments. Chunk them into smaller
pieces and do a little each day.
• Take short breaks. Eat a healthy snack or go get some exercise for a little while. You
feel better and have more energy to get your work done.
• Prioritize. First get the homework done that is due the next day and then move on to
other projects.
• Strive for excellence NOT perfection “nobody’s perfect”. Ask your teacher how long
they think the assignment/project should take on average. If you are consistently
spending well above the average you may be struggling with perfectionism or too
many distractions.
• Ask for help when you need it. Most teachers are more than happy to answer your
questions and help you with the subjects you are struggling with. Many teachers
arrive at school early or might be willing to stay after if you ask them. Everyone wants
you to succeed!
PARENTS:
• Parents play a valuable part in helping children succeed in their education. Continue
to show an interest in their work and let them know the value of a great education.
• Start teaching your kids at a young age how to use a planner or calendar. It helps
them learn good time management skills. Most students are provided with planners at
school. If not, pick one up at an office supply store. Take a look at them regularly and
see how well they are staying organized. Offer suggestions if you see they might need
a little extra help.
• Ask about homework each night and be available to help with guidance not answers.
• Be encouraging and supportive. Reward them occasionally for a job well done.
• Be aware if a subject is too difficult. Stay in contact with your child’s teacher and ask
how you can support them and how they can support you and your child. You may
need to provide extra support by finding a tutor.
• Most elementary students bring home completed assignments each week, so take
time to look through their folders and praise and encourage them.
• Most Junior High and High School students have their grades posted on the school’s
website grading program (i.e. Eclass, RenWeb, etc.) Make sure to find out which
program your school uses and get your password to log on. The sites should be
updated regularly. This is an excellent way to keep current with how your child is
doing in his/her classes and a great opportunity to stay involved and find out ways you
can help.
