It is almost impossible to turn on the TV or
radio today without hearing someone make
a prediction about the stock market. They
seem to know what they are talking about,
have solid credentials and represent well
known Wall Street companies. But how ac-
curate is this information and can it help you be a successful investor?
Weston Wellington has made it his mission to be a media watchdog,
pointing out their horrendous track record on making predictions about the
stock market which he refers to as "Investment Pornography." Magazines
that proclaim "We've found the next Microsoft" and "The 10 Stocks You
Must Own" try to entice readers into thinking they can easily become a
successful investor.
But what do the results behind the headlines say? Using numerous media
excerpts and cover stories Weston shows specific examples of how wrong
the media has been on so many occasions and why you shouldn’t practice
market timing, tactical asset allocation or try to find the so called “best and
brightest” money manager.
Weston J. Wellington is one of Dimensional Fund Advisors’ in-house
research experts. One of the firm's most engaging speakers, Weston is an
accomplished writer as well, with a regular column on Dimensional's
website, From the Research Desk. It is from this pulpit that he launches his
debunking of erroneous media predictions about the markets. This media
watchdog role gives Weston another forum to emphasize the importance of
"discipline and diversification."
Prior to joining Dimensional in 1995, Weston was director of research at LPL
Financial Services, Inc. in Boston, and he has accumulated more than thirty
years' experience in the investment industry. He holds a B.A. in history from
Yale University.
