We discuss the inverse obstacle scattering problem for diffuse optical to-
mography in a half-space and a slab. We model the obstacle by an absorption
heterogeneity. When measurements at the boundary include variations in an-
gle of detection, we derive a reduced problem by removing surface sources
explicitly. This reduced problem is more suitable than the original problem
for several different approximations in the literature.
