Sharing Our Stories
Telling
Telling your story of outreach and
engagement is synonymous to
publishing, but it could be a lot more fun
because of the range of styles and media
you could use.
Sharing Our Stories
Telling
The medium you choose
depends on:
• Why you are telling your story
• Who is your audience
• The resources you have available
• Time
• Money
• People
• Technology
Sharing Our Stories
Telling
Why are you telling your
story?
• To document achievement
• To provide a model for others
• To celebrate success
• To help in securing funding
Sharing Our Stories
Telling
Who is your audience?
• Colleagues in your discipline
• Researchers
• University administrators
• Potential funders
• The general public
Sharing Our Stories
Telling
What resources do you
have available?
Explicitly or intuitively, you almost always
consider time, money and people in
planning, so we don’t need to dwell on
them here. In telling your story of
outreach, what may be more useful is to
talk about technology.
Sharing Our Stories
Telling
• Is technology a magic word or a dirty word
in your book?
• Do you have tech-savvy people on your
staff or are you a one-person band?
• To be sure the medium is not the
message so don’t get hung up on
streaming video or podcasting.

• Depending on your purpose, your
audience, and the core message you want
to convey, you have at least three options.
You could go low tech.
You could go high tech.
You could “get real”!
