Dear Colleague
Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year. On behalf of the East Penn Board of School Directors and
the Central Office staff let me extend our hope that the upcoming school year will be productive,
successful, and satisfying.
This year we will change the sequence of activities on the Annual Back to School Day. We will
start the day promptly at 8:30 a.m. in the Emmaus High School Auditorium and then ask you to report to
your assignment so that more time may be spent in the schools working on school and district related
matters.
This summer has been busy and time has flown by. Many individuals have been hard at work
trying to get your school and classroom ready for our first student day. In addition, many changes have
occurred over the summer and some of them are as follows:
• Willow Lane is progressing nicely and it will be completed by the winter vacation.
• The new artificial running track has been installed at EHS.
• Eyer and Lower Macungie Middle School now have wireless connections.
• Aesop, the automated sub-calling system is ready for implementation and the system should help
provide for a smoother assignment of substitutes.
• Roofs have been repaired at EHS, Lower Macungie Middle School and Wescosville.
• A new elementary reading coach has been hired.
• A new behaviorist position has been added to help us meet the needs of autistic children.
• We have a commitment from the El Quadah Leaders School of Giza, Egypt to partner with us at
all levels.
• We are in the process of developing a “magnet school” concept based on Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math for implementation at Willow Lane in September 2010 and the DaVinci
Center will be a key partner in our efforts to create an extraordinary learning opportunity for some
district students and staff.
• There will be an emphasis placed on developing some pilot project based learning units at all
levels.
• Nicole Bloise has joined East Penn as our new Community Liaison and she will be producing our
new staff and community newsletters.
• Susan Noack has been appointed as the new Elementary Curriculum Coordinator.
• Kristen Campbell has joined the Central Office staff as an Assistant to the Superintendent, and she
will continue to be involved in all aspects of the elementary program.
• We will appoint a new Lincoln principal and assistant principal at Lower Macungie Middle
School on August 24th.
I have some disappointing news to report. As of August 17, the State Legislature and the Governor
have not agreed upon a new State budget. This delay coupled with a decline in our real estate and
earned income tax revenues will force us to be more frugal in approving spending requests until the
fiscal climate has improved. Please bear with us and understand that our reluctance to approve some
routine requests is not done in a contrarian or negative spirit but one rather of caution and due
diligence. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
I sincerely hope that you enjoy your final days of the 2009 summer. I know that our combined efforts
will move the children of the East Penn School District closer to the hopes and dreams of having them
become better problem solvers, and critical thinkers as well as outstanding communicators and
collaborators.
Best wishes
Thomas L. Seidenberger, Ed. D.
