Hunger Helpers: Give this important letter to your parents!
Dear Parents,
Feeding America food banks play a critical role in supporting child nutrition programs. As Congress
prepares to reauthorize and strengthen these programs, our food banks are actively involved in
developing proposals for legislative changes that will help the crusade to end childhood hunger in
America.
Our child nutrition priorities are designed to: (1) strengthen the quality and efficiency of all child
nutrition programs; (2) fill the gaps in food service for millions of low-income children; and (3) offer
creative ideas for new and innovative approaches to ending childhood hunger. High on our priority list
are proposals to reach more needy children by broadening and expanding access to the Summer
Food Service Program (SFSP) and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
President Obama’s commitment to ending childhood hunger in America by 2015 argues for a substantial
new investment in child nutrition, and we strongly urge Congress to provide an additional $20 billion
over five years to make improvements to programs like these so that all children will have access to a
safe, nutritious and healthy diet.
A great way to emphasize the importance of our cause to Congress is for them to hear our voices –
and those of children in America. Included in this printable packet is a picture of a placemat. Let your
child write and color why he or she thinks Congress should ensure that ALL children in America get
the food they need.
Once your child has created a personal message, simply mail the placemat to:

THANK YOU FOR BECOMING A HUNGER HELPER!
What does it feel like when you are hungry?
How does your body feel?
Do you feel like running, jumping and playing? or…Do you feel tired?
How does your head feel?
Is it easy to concentrate and come up with answers at school? or…. Are you watching for lunch?
What kinds of emotions do you feel when you are hungry?
Happy Sad Angry Anxious Scared
Did you know…?
Each year, millions of children (in fact, 1 in 6) can’t get the food they need. Many of your classmates
may not have enough to eat, and you may not even know it. It isn’t always easy to see hunger. But it
makes kids feel sleepy, sad and anxious, and it makes it hard for them to concentrate.
Imagine these kids represent your classmates. Circle every 6th child:
How many classmates did you circle? That’s how many might be suffering from hunger. With your help,
though, we can fight hunger by raising awareness about it. This kit contains fun ways to remind yourself
and others of the importance of fighting hunger and even to write you Congressmen to tell them why
you think every kid should get the food he or she needs.
