cameras are present throughout the building and grounds and will be used to provide additional security for
the building and campus.

(www.moundsviewschools.org) and the building website (www.moundsviewschools.org/moundsview).
Student Planner - A student handbook and planner will be distributed to all students the first week of
school. The handbook contains information about school rules and district policies. Students are being
provided with a planner in an effort to promote organizational and study skills. Enclosed is a “Quick
Reference Guide” for parents. It highlights key areas of the handbook. Please complete the form on the
front and return with the Student Health & Emergency Record when you pick up your schedule. We ask
you to review the “Quick Reference Guide” now and to discuss the complete handbook with your student
during the first week of school. In particular note the dress code on page 15 and the electronic devices on
page 13. The following sections have been revised or added to our student handbook and planner:
• School closings (page 2)
• Automated phone messages (page 2)
• District policy information (page 2) (previously mailed separately in the back to school packet)
• Attendance (page 10)
School Excuse Form for Doctor / Dental Appointments - *THIS IS A NEW PROCESS* Every effort
should be made to schedule appointments outside the school day. If this is not possible, the student
should: Submit a note to the Attendance Office to obtain a Medical Appointment Pass. Have the Medical
Appointment Pass signed by the medical person seen and return the pass to the Attendance Office upon
returning to school.
Late Bus - *CHANGE* The late bus leaves Mounds View High School at 3:00pm on Tuesdays and
Student Lockers - Locker assignments will be included on class schedules. Students are reminded not to
leave expensive items such as electronic equipment, calculators or money in a hall or physical education
locker. While we do our best to provide secure lockers, the school cannot guarantee the safety of personal
possessions nor does it have insurance to cover loss of private property. Students are also reminded not to
share their lock combination with others. Students with a physical education class are asked to bring a lock
to their first class meeting. Students choosing not to use the assigned hall locker must notify the office.
Otherwise they will continue to be responsible for the locker and its condition.
Volunteer Opportunities – Throughout the year we may be in need of volunteers. Opportunities may
include dance chaperones, serve on school committees, assist office staff with clerical tasks, mass mailings,
filing, etc., assist with hallway / lunchroom supervision or provide an item of food for staff meals during
conferences. We make requests for volunteers through our daily bulletin.
Attendance - Regular attendance is very important for successful school work, because learning occurs
best through planned interaction between students and faculty. To encourage regular attendance, Mounds
View High School works to build a partnership with students’ families. The school also works in
partnership with the Ramsey County Truancy Intervention Program (TIP). One of the strategies of this
program is providing early interventions with unexcused absences. Mounds View will be advising families
of the TIP program process when their student has any unexcused absences on three (3) or more days.
Cell Phones - Our Operations Committee had discussions around the increasing disruptions teachers are
finding due to student cell phone use. In order to maintain an environment conducive to learning, the
following policy regarding cell phones is in effect. The expectation is that students do not access cell
phones in any academic setting. This includes, but is not limited to, classrooms, the Media Center,
computer labs, office areas, and locker rooms. In addition, there may be situations where students will be
directed not to use cell phones, even if they are not in an academic setting. Violations of this expectation
will be handled as follows. On the first occasion, the item is turned in to the Student Services Office, a
warning is recorded, and the item is returned to the student at the end of the day. On subsequent occasions,
the item is turned in to the Student Services Office and held for a parent conference and parent pick-up.
SchoolView Parent Portal Information - SchoolView will be available at the start of the coming school

Automated Phone Messages - Mounds View Messaging gives school principals the ability to send voice-mail
messages to parents in the event of an emergency. Principals can also send less urgent messages including
school attendance reports, event announcements and other helpful reminders. Parents should make certain that
the contact information they provide on the Student Health and Emergency Information form is current. Parents
who wish to opt out can do so by sending an e-mail message to email@example.com with the
phone number(s) they wish to be blocked. In addition to Mounds View Messaging, the District will continue to
communicate urgent information through traditional methods including local media outlets, cable channel 20,
and the District’s web site (www.moundsviewschools.org).
Nutrition Services – You will receive a letter from Nutrition Services by mid-August. This letter will
include PIN numbers and remaining balances for returning students. Students new to the high school will
also receive their PIN number in the letter. Students may purchase a full lunch for $2.60 ($3.50 for the
second meal) or milk for 40¢. Ala Carte items are also available and priced individually. Students may
deposit lunch money when they pick up their schedules or on the first day of school. You also can make a
credit card payment using our FREE online service at www.paypams.com. Nutrition Services continues to
examine ways to make school lunch offerings more nutritious.
Bus Schedules, Passes and Transportation – Only students with a bus pass may ride the bus. Students
may board and get off buses only at the stop listed on their bus pass. If you live within 2 miles of the
school, there is a per-student fee for bus service. This fee is $225 for new students and $250 for those
registering late. Students in grades 9 and 10 who live more that 2 miles from school were automatically
registered and will be mailed a postcard / bus pass with bus number, pick-up time, location, and
approximate drop-off time the third or fourth week in August. Students in grades 11 and 12 who live
more than two (2) miles from the school must register for busing. Only students registered by the June
8 deadline are guaranteed bus service starting September 8. If your student was not registered by June 8,
you may stop in Student Services for an application or go to www.moundsviewschools.org. Students who
have already registered will be mailed a postcard / bus pass with bus number, pick-up time, location, and
