Dear Families,
Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year at Romona. We are all very excited to begin this new year with
you. As many of you know, I am the interim principal this year at Romona. Dr. Mauer is now the
superintendent of the Milburn School District. I have had many opportunities to speak with her throughout
the summer. While she is missing the families of Romona, she is doing very well and enjoying her new
role. This will be my fifteenth year in District 39. I have worked as a special education teacher at
Highcrest, a special education coordinator at most of the District 39 schools, and been an assistant
principal at Romona, Central and Highcrest. I very much appreciate the Wilmette community and am
thrilled to be able to work with Romona once again.
This summer I was able to spend time at home with my children Michael, age 4 ½, and Alexandra “Lexie”,
6 months. We spent many days playing outside, taking walks and hoping for weather warm enough to go
swimming. Every day I learned something new from them. Michael will be going to full day preschool this
fall, and Lexie will be with Grandma and Papa. My husband is responsible for professional development
and continuing legal education for attorneys at a law firm in the city. Finally, I try each weekend to carve
out time to work on my dissertation. I have been working on my doctorate in education for many years. I
have been told that “slow and steady” wins the race. I hope that is true!
th
Romona has been very busy this summer as well. With our construction beginning on July 6 , it is hard
to imagine, but the school is just about ready for the teachers’ return. New floor tiling was placed in areas
of the first and second floor. Our custodial crew has been hard at work cleaning the classrooms, furniture
and floors for us. The building is in excellent condition as a result of their effort. Additionally, you may
have noticed some new activities painted on the playground. We have been working to add to and
develop activities for the students during recess. Through a program called Peaceful Playgrounds, we
hope to provide more opportunities for students to engage in play during their recess. More information
will be coming your way as we begin to unfold some of these new activities.
Finally, I wanted to share some information regarding communication for this upcoming school year. As
in the past, I will be sending weekly emails to our families on Fridays. Please look for this email and read
through it carefully as this will be the main avenue for sharing information from the school this year. In
addition to “News You Can Use” that you will receive on Fridays, you will receive a weekly email from the
PTA. The PTA will generate the contents of the email, but it will be sent from me. You can expect to
receive the PTA news on Wednesdays. Again, please take time to read through this email, as it will
contain a wealth of information. We hope that these two weekly opportunities for information will allow
everyone to be well informed about the happenings at Romona. Should you have any questions or
concerns at any point this school year, please do not hesitate to call, email or come in to see me. I look
forward to getting to know you and your children.
Warmly,
Heather Glowacki
