Peer-Review of the Portfolio-of-Learning:
Describe the pieces of the mosaic that your colleague utilized in his/her ‘Portfolio-of-
Learning’ and how those pieces demonstrate her/his learning about the topic overall. For
example, what evidence does the portfolio-of-learning provide that indicates your
colleague learned a lot from his/her research on the topic? I can see that you internalized
this information by providing a summary of the nonprofit organizations in your own
words. I also know that this information is relevant to you because you made connections
to your own life and your current teaching situation at your site school.
Provide thoughtful commentary about the evident learning growth of your colleague in
each of the required areas:
a. vocabulary and concept development You did a GREAT job of explaining and
defining each nonprofit organization. Your summaries were clear and concise.
You used the abbreviations well and in a way that didn’t make me think…”wait,
what did A.B.C.D. mean again?” You obviously understand what each of these
organizations mean and stand for, as is evident in your explanations.
b. b. key ideas I liked how after each website that you posted you provided a
summary of your interpretation of the big ideas. The Afterschool Programs
information was quite detailed but because you offered a summary and connected
the information to the reader it was accessible. I liked how you separated each
organization to provide a visual guide for following your wikispace. Also, you
made the topic headings bold which helped the learner focus on important aspects
of the organization.
c. partner school connections You clearly stated that Laredo’s student population
consists mostly of walking students that do not have supervision when walking to and
from school and after school. You also mentioned why and how Laredo could benefit
from having programs like BGCA and MEP.
d. action plan for teaching You’re very detailed notes from the Afterschool Program
provided many ways to get involved in establishing or maintaining these types of
programs in our school districts. In fact, you provided connections for the learner to
each nonprofit organization so that they may apply for these programs and share the
links with others.
Discuss at least two suggestions you have for the portfolio to improve its impact and/or
demonstration of learning growth.
Reread carefully or spell/grammar check. For example, “for teachers they several
lesson plans” didn’t make sense but I understood what you were saying by the sentence that
followed. Also, “Boys Club Girls Club gives them a poitive place.” I understand what you
mean but if you want to publish this information or share it with professionals in your field you
might want to make a few changes.
I had a hard time thinking of a second critique because you did such a great job on
your module! Perhaps include a little less reading. Can you find a video that explains the
BGCA or a principal explaining the importance of afterschool programs?
Elaborate on specific things you learned about this topic from viewing/reading this
portfolio.
I learned that through the UNICEF website students can have important papers
translated into their language (so cool!).
I learned that any club no matter what size can partner with the Boys and Girls
Club of America to offer academic enrichment, school engagement, intensive
intervention and case management! What a great resource for students that need
consistency and extra support!
I was happy to learn about the Migrant Education Program to help new students
receive the attention and proper academic placement that they need. It is evident
that this would be a great resource to help reduce the frustration that leads to high
dropout rates among migrant students.
