U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Rep. (Last Name):
As a person of faith, I believe in the principles of human dignity, equality of all people and acceptance of our
neighbors. I believe these are fundamental American values as well. Yet the immigration detention system erodes
these principles by holding hundreds of thousands of people in jail-like conditions every year, costing taxpayers
nearly $2 billion. Many of them include asylum seekers, torture survivors, children, pregnant women, families, the
elderly and others for whom detention is inappropriate.
I therefore urge you to support the Immigration Oversight and Fairness Act of 2009 (H.R. 1215), a bill
introduced by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA). This important piece of legislation would reform our costly
immigration detention system and reaffirm our nation’s values of dignity and respect.
Thank you for your service to my district. I will continue to pray for you and your colleagues as you work on
immigration reform and for the many immigrants waiting for justice in detention facilities across our nation.
