What is Pop Art?
• Pop Art was first defined in Britain during
the 1950s.
• The artists had a large interest in the mass
media, advertising, comics and consumer
products.

• Pop Art occurred mainly in Britain and in
the United States.
• It was linked to the wealth and prosperity
to the post World War II era.
• Pop Art also decreased the gap between
"high art" and "low art" and eliminated the
distinction between fine art and
commercial art methods.

• Andy Warhol was born
Andrew Warhola in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
in 1928.
• He entered the Carnegie
Institute of Technology
(now Carnegie Mellon
University) in 1945,
where he majored in
pictorial design.

• Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a
successful career as a commercial artist, winning
several commendations from the Art Director's
Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
• During these years he
shortened his name to
Warhol.
• The 1960s Andy Warhol
was very prolific with his
art.
• Andy Warhol became famous off of appropriated
images of the popular culture of the time.
• He died February 22, 1987
after a routine surgery.
