Effortless Respiration Sensors

User Manual

Instructions for Use:

About Effortless Respiration Sensors:

The KarmaMatters branded Biofeedback Effortless Respiration Sensors have been designed and

developed for use in sleep studies and biofeedback respiration training using the J&J

Biofeedback Systems.

C. J&J I-330 Snap Adapter

A. Hardware User Manual

Item # 9001 Single Piezo Resistive Effort Sensor / Double Buckle

Item # 9002 Pair Piezo Resistive Effort Sensor / Double Buckles

Description:

Using a piezo-resisitve element, the Respiration effort sensor converts chest or abdominal

respiration motions to small resistance changes that provides a clear reliable indication of

respiration waveforms. The sensor does not require a battery or interface; it is easily activated

by plugging into the respiration effort channel on the appropriate biofeedback recording system

that accepts resistive transducers.

Indications for Use:

KarmaMatters Effortless Respiration Sensors provide a qualitative measure of respiration

movements, for recording onto an FDA-cleared data acquisition system. Their target population

is children and adult patients who are screened during a biofeedback monitoring session.

Applying the Sensor:

The patient should stand or sit up straight for optimal positioning of the sensor.

To Position the Sensor:

1. Strap the sensor bands snuggly around the patient’s abdomen or chest over their clothes.

Make sure the sensor does not touch the skin.

2. Select the area on the chest/abdomen where the bands will not slide out of place during

the monitoring session

3. The sensor strap should be slightly off the center line of body.

4. Gently tighten the bands to secure them in place. These will be interference with the

signal (noise) if the bands are too tight or too loose.

Cleaning the Sensor:

Wipe the sensor and cable with a non-corrosive (to plastic) cleanser to clean before use. Make

sure the complete sensor assembly is thoroughly dry before reusing.

To sterilize the sensors, use standard sterilization procedures. Do not autoclave or soak the

sensor in disinfectants.

B. Software User Manual

Managing Software Functions when Using the New JJ Windows Based Software

The KarmaMatters Effortless Biofeedback Respiration Sensors are not as sensitive as the original

J&J Rubber Respiration Sensors. An increase in ‘Gain’ as found in the J&J software is required.

Sometimes it takes 30-60 seconds for the signal to be displayed on the screen. If the signal does

not display after 60 seconds, then Disconnect and Re-Snap the cable to the respiration sensors

snap connector.

Be sure the sensors are on snug. Increase tension if necessary.

If you still do not see the respiration signal, you will need to adjust the Signal’s Gain and Off-

Set.

For Best Results Manually Change the Signal’s Gain and Off-Set:

1. Auto Gain should be off. Set the gain manually so that the signal displays appropriately.

2. Turn Auto-Center on in order to make the signal visible. Once in view, turn off Auto-Center

and raise or lower signal manually. If the respiration signal is flat or weak, manually increase

Gain. Fine-tune by adjusting gain so that the signals display to your likening. Adjust sensor

straps for a more snug fit to increase signal sensitivity.

Raise Signal (max is 41)

Lower Signal

Auto Off-Set (center) On/Off  off position recommended

Increase Gain

Decrease Gain Select respiration channel to

3. J&J I-330 Snap Adapter

Item # 9003 J&J I-330 Sensor Snap Adapter

Snap Adapters are needed for users of the original J&J I-I330 System using the CH300

Respiration Cable.

Connect the Snap Adapters to the snaps on each sensor as shown.
