Jacques Schraven is currently chairman of the Supervisory Board of Corus
Nederland BV and a non-executive director of Tata Steel Limited (India)
Jacques H. Schraven was born in 1942. After completing his military service as a
reserve officer, he graduated as a lawyer at the Radboud University of Nijmegen..
In 1968 Mr Schraven joined the legal department of the Royal Dutch Shell Group in
The Hague. After a series of legal and commercial secondments in the Netherlands,
CuraƧao, Venezuela and the United Kingdom, he moved to Buenos Aires in 1984 as
chief executive of the Shell companies in Argentina. From 1988 he served as a
director of the Corporate Centre within the central offices of the Group in London and
The Hague, where he was responsible for legal affairs and intellectual property. In
1997 he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Shell Nederland B.V..
From 1999 until 2005 Mr Schraven served as president of the Confederation of
Netherlands Industry and Employers VNO-NCW. During that period he was also
deputy chairman of the Social Economic Council and chairman of the Labour
Foundation. He also served as a member of the Bank Council of the Nederlandsche
Bank and as chairman of the Netherlands Council for Financial Reporting.
In 2000 Mr Schraven was elected vice chairman of UNICE, the Union of Industrial
and Employers' Confederation of Europe (recently renamed Business Europe)
Mr Schraven is currently the chairman of the European Association of Listed
Companies (EALIC) and a member of the supervisory boards of NUON, Oranje-
Nassau Group and Fortis OBAM. He is also chairman of the Foundation Trust Office
Unilever N.V. Outside the business sector he serves as chairman advisory committee
of the Netherlands Blood Institute Sanquin. His other directorships include the
Netherlands Normalization Institute, the Carnegie Foundation, the Clingendael
Institute for international studies, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prinses
Christina Concours and the International Longevity Centre of The Netherlands.
Mr Schraven is married with a daughter and two sons. His hobbies are classical music
and jazz, the visual arts, sailing and golf.
