Praise God for your interest in being baptized! This is a significant and wonderful step
in your spiritual journey. This sheet is designed to help you understand what baptism is
about before the celebration. Take time to study the scriptures and answer the
What is baptism?
Baptism is significant because its meaning is one of identification: to change identity, to
be identified with someone or something. Much like a bride is identifying herself with
her husband on her wedding day. Jesus too was identifying Himself with the Father
when He was baptized. (John 1:29-34)
How is this step significant to you by identifying yourself with God through Jesus Christ?
Luke 14:25-33 talks about the cost of following Jesus. What does Jesus say? What does
this mean for you as you take the step of baptism?
Why should I be baptized?
Baptism is an act of obedience for all believers to publically share your allegiance to
Read Act 2:38-47. This is the story of the beginning of the Church. What instructions can
we live by as part of God’s family?
Why baptism by immersion?
Read Romans 6:1-11
Origin of the baptism is from the Greek: baptizo meaning "to dunk or immerse."
In the popular literature of New Testament times the word was used of ships that sank.
At Woodridge Church we practice baptism by immersion because it is the strongest
symbolically to what Christ did for us in His death and resurrection.
How do these verses paint a picture of baptism in what Jesus Christ did for us as well as
what happens in your life?
Will baptism save me?
Baptism itself will not save you. Baptism is only a symbol of what God has done
spiritually in your heart by confessing your sins and placing your faith in Jesus Christ.
Read Ephesians 2:8-9. How are we told we are saved? What does “grace through faith”
mean for you?
When should I be baptized?
You can be baptized any time after you have made a faith commitment. This is why
we do not practice infant baptism, because scripture teaches it is an outward sign of
what has already taken place spiritually.
Read Galatians 3:24-29. What do you learn about yourself and the significance of
baptism as we are united with Christ?

His Name, and currently walking with Him.
