STC Student Officers Host First Ever TC Career Fair
by Lindsey Saunders
Every year, TC students are frustrated by traditional career fairs because the recruiters
that attend them seem to be lost by the TC profession. Students go to them hoping to find
job opportunities in their field but are disappointed, and even annoyed, when they have to
explain to recruiters what TC is. If employers don’t know anything about the TC
profession, how are they going to hire TC students?
This year, the officers of the Society for Technical Communication student chapter took
matters into their own hands to produce a career fair explicitly for TC students. On April
15, 2005, energized by a common goal, students and employers gathered in a quaint room
with high hopes. The TC Career Fair was intended to do two things: provide new
networking opportunities for students and employers, and build and strengthen
relationships between the TC department and technology-based companies.
The career fair attracted over 40 students and 14 employers. It was so packed that one
recruiter from Microsoft held a breakout session with half a dozen students next door to
facilitate a group discussion.
Companies were looking to hire at all levels of experience, from internships and entry-
level positions to full time positions with 5-10 years of industry experience. They were also
hiring for an equally expansive list of positions, including technical writers and editors,
database managers, programmer/writers, usability specialists, project managers and
coordinators, print publishing leads, and online production specialists. Many students at
least secured interviews with these companies; some of them successfully landed jobs.
The companies that participated in the career fair were Boeing, Microsoft, Pratt &
Whitney, Sakson & Taylor, T-Mobile, and WASSER Studios. Among the attendees were
students receiving their BSTC, MSTC, and Certificates in TC. Everyone agreed that the
event was incredibly successful and long over due. The positive feedback led officers to
decide to make the fair an annual event.
