   deployments.
     • No special equipment required (Ethernet switches, $14,000
         NICs).
                                                                $12,000

     • Mid-range SAN arrays support both FC
and iSCSI (CX3-10, 3-20, 3-40) Fibre Channel iSCSI

  Debunking Myths: Performance

    Myth: iSCSI doesn’t have the
    performance required for
    enterprise applications

    Facts:
      • For Random I/O applications, network
        has negligible effect on performance
          – Databases, SQL, Exchange
          – Fewer than 60 drives

      • Applications with sequential I/O
benefit from FC or SAS bandwidth
          – Streaming Media, Decision Support

  Debunking Myths: Security

       Myth: iSCSI is not secure

Fact: Logically or physically separating your iSCSI
network achieves same security level as FC
         • For max security: Either use a dedicated network or if using
           corporate messaging network, implement VLANs

         • If you need to allow other access to your iSCSI network, implement
           networking security best practices
                  – Utilize access controls into the network
                  – Implement Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) to
                    provide initiator/target authentication

         • Remind customers that file servers also often serve sensitive data
over the LAN, but are considered secure if controlled properly.

  iSCSI best practices

Use iSCSI consolidation for Random I/O or light-use sequential
       applications

Use Dedicated Storage paths for best security and performance
         • NICs
             – iSCSI benefits from TCP/IP Offload (TOE standard on PowerEdge Servers)
             – Good performance from standard GbE NICs/LOM
         • Switch
             – Physically separate network is best
             – Use a managed switch to VLAN

If you need to allow other access to your iSCSI network,
            implement networking security best practices
         • Utilize access controls into the network
         • Implement Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) to provide
           initiator/target authentication

Performance Data
  Performance Considerations

 Storage performance is a function of four components:
 Total number of hard disk drives
 Drive type (SAS, SATA), rotational speed (7.2K, 10K, 15K)
 Array Controllers’ Bandwidth, IOPS and Cache Settings
 Interconnect (cabling) technology and number of data paths

 Storage performance is measured in IOPS and MB/s
 MB/s measures throughput: Especially important for File/Print,
streaming media & Nearline applications such as disk to disk BU.
 IOPS (input/output per second) measures transactions speeds:
                      Important for Exchange & Databases
 Customers think in application workloads (# USERS, Timed events)

                                                            iSCSI revenue will grow

           Factoids (based on Gartner research)
•iSCSI will be most successful in the SMB market.
•iSCSI is particularly applicable to Windows and Linux environments.
•iSCSI won't be the dominant SAN fabric in large data centers.
•iSCSI has real cost savings, but they're smaller than advertised.
•Management software, scale, and security are issues today.
