Leg 1 (2003)
Phoenix AC
1
Runners need to keep on the grass after the start and not run on the road.
2
Crossing the B2103 is not usually a problem with the early morning starts
as there is not much traffic around.
3
Crossing the A259 is obviously more of a problem although again not a
great deal of traffic at this time of morning. A marshal at this point would
be ideal especially as there tends to be a group of runners together at this
stage and some may take risks crossing the road. If this is not possible
then maybe signs warning traffic of runners crossing.
4
No other obvious problems on the rest of the leg only that runners need to
be aware of cars when they come out onto the Friston to Jevington road.
Leg 2
Start: Jevington Church Revised 2010
Finish: Bo Peep Car Park
Length: 5.75 miles
Hailsham Harriers, revised by Seaford Striders
Mileage Points/Potential Hazards/Risk Rating
0-0.5 miles After passing the field on your left hand side you climb through a wooded area,
this is full of tree roots and very rutted. Risk of injury on the climb. Medium risk
0.5-2.5 miles There are no roads to cross for the first 2.5 miles and the course is a mixture
of paths, fields and chalk paths. The rules state that the route over the top of Windover Hill
is allowed thus avoiding the chalk path down the hill. Low risk
2.5 mile point Take care when crossing the Wilmington to Litlington road. Not a particularly
busy road but the cars are fast. High risk
2.5-3 miles Just after crossing the road take the fast down hill track towards Alfriston. Watch
out at the top of the track, do not take the left-hand footpath to Plonk Barn as this is strictly
prohibited in the rules. Risk of injury on the rutted fast down hill track. Medium risk
3-4 miles At the bottom of the track is another road but this is not as busy as the road at the
top of the track. Before you reach the bridge just prior to the gate be aware of tree roots.
The route goes over the river via the white bridge in Alfriston, which can be slippery, if the
weather is wet. Once you have crossed the white bridge do not carry straight on through the
alleyway as this is strictly prohibited in the rules. Please ensure you follow the South Downs
Way signs to the right, then left onto River Lane, then out of the village & right onto Star
Lane. Take care when crossing over the High Street in Alfriston although the traffic will be
slow moving. The route then goes through the residential “Kings Ride” up to the downs.
Watch out for traffic until you merge with the chalk path. Medium risk
4-5.75 miles After Alfriston the route then becomes straightforward and the paths take you
to Bo Peep car park. Low risk
Conclusion:
The end of the leg is low risk, the hazards occur at the beginning with the climb through the
wooded area, when approaching Alfriston and prior to reaching the bridge. The climb
mentioned in the first 0.5 mile and the fast down hill track mentioned at the 2.5 mile point
are both very rutted, full of tree roots and chalk. If it is also wet, then they could be lethal
from an injury point of view.
Watch out also when crossing the river at the white bridge if the weather is wet, keep tight
hold of your baton! Compared to other legs there are no great risks from traffic apart from
the Wilmington to Litlington road.

Risk Assessment: South Downs Way Leg 3
Bob Peep to Itford Farm 2010
Assessor: Guy Stockwell Date: 13/05/2010
General The majority of the leg is on a wide grass track, with occasional ruts and patches exposing the underlying chalk and flint. These changes in surface can cause a potential trip hazard, so care should be taken.
Most of the path is at height, with little cover; in good weather there is potential for heat related injury, and in poor conditions runners could suffer from exposure. Please be prepared for all eventualities.
At the time of the risk assessment cattle with young were a notable hazard.

Leg 4
Itford Farm (A26) to Housedean Farm (A27)
Heathfield Road Runners 2008
Updated by Lewes AC 2010
Parking
In lay-by on eastern side of the A26 opposite Itford Farm.
This road is busy, it carries a high proportion of traffic for Newhaven Harbour. Some of the vehicles
are very large and some move fast along this stretch. The lay-by is narrow and adjacent to the road;
care needed when exiting the vehicle.
Team buses will need to turn here before moving off to the next checkpoint; it is a dangerous
manoeuvre. Therefore, team members/supporters must keep clear of the road at all times and to
allow drivers maximum visibility. Also, those present must be aware that the SDW itself is usually
used as a turning place, and generally to keep out of the way.
Vehicles rejoin the A27 at the Beddingham roundabout and continue past the next checkpoint to
junction at Falmer in order to reach the lay-by on the other carriageway (do not use farm access
bridge at checkpoint). Although the checkpoint is not on the carriageway, drivers must be aware that
runners and others may be eating/drinking/stretching in parking lay-by. If this layby is full, in spite of
being quite long, drivers must not obstruct the road. This changeover is on a well used cycle path
Running the Leg
The handover takes place to the west of Itford farm, and after 100yards there is a railway level
crossing. This has pedestrian access across the track; it is gated and has warning lights. There is
also a footbridge. Trains will be running fast through here on the day of the race. The potential
danger of this crossing must be appreciated. It is not impossible to stumble on the track. If a train is
anywhere near approaching the bridge has to be used.
The road to Southease is very quiet but nevertheless does carry traffic and general road awareness
is needed.
Just after passing Southease Church a road must be crossed. This can be busy and can be very
fast, exercise extreme caution at this point. A short section across fields is followed (after turning left)
by approx 1km of farmyard track; this is generally good underfoot.
The next time that a vehicle could be encountered is at the top of Mill Hill where there is access to
residential properties. There follows a short narrow enclosed path where horses have been
encountered, best give way to them and if overtaking, make your presence known before passing.
From here to near the end of the leg is off-road and mostly good underfoot.
There are two minor access tracks to be crossed before reaching the concrete ‘Yellow Brick Road’.
After turning off the concrete track and turning left at the field gate the following section is quite
uneven and flinty in places.
After turning north, the descent to the end of the leg is good underfoot until the ‘new’ section
approaching the A27. This area is well colonized by rabbits that have made the ground very
‘uncomfortable’ to run on. It is also narrow in places, bordered by a barbed wire fence, slippery in
places when wet, and there are exposed roots.
Return to the road is made at the access road over the A27. Road use here is light but be aware that
any traffic encountered will have just come off the fast duel carriageway.
Pedestrians in the parking lay-by on the A27 should be aware that vehicles can enter or exit this area
at speed; keep off the road.
Overall, this is a long leg and it is quite possible to get badly off-route i.e. lost. Familiarization is
recommended. In hot weather adequate hydration also needs to be considered.

Nr Springhead Hill (017 118) to Houghton Lane (951 144)
Risk Assessment by Phoenix AC
Reviewed 6 May 2010
Updated from NU exiles 2008
Drivers' view
– drivers should allow sufficient time to travel from Washington to
Springhead Hill through Storrington town centre which often gets
congested.
– the lane up to the Springhead Hill car park is narrow and steep in
places – please drive with caution and courtesy.
– the car park is popular with walkers and horse riders and is usually busy.
Complaints have been received in the past that "vehicles were parked all
over the road" so please park with thought for others.
– this is a short fast running leg and so Leg 9 runners should embark quickly to allow
sufficient time to get to the Houghton Lane Leg 11 start. Traffic through Amberley is
sometimes very congested especially at weekends (and there was road works when this
assessment was made 06/05/10).
Runners' view
– a straight forward leg, predominantly downhill, with a clear wide track
for the hand over at the start of the leg.
– steep downhill (at 1.5-2 miles) on flinty uneven paths – take care!
– joins tarmac lane down to main road beware traffic
– the SDW crosses B2139 (New Barn Road) so beware fast traffic. This is a very busy
road and NO marshals. Look both ways!
– towards the end of the leg in the Arun valley after crossing the footbridge over the river.
In previous years, cows have been known to graze in these fields either side of river.
Runners should remain on the footpath and not cut across the field. Runner hand over on
Houghton Lane.
Marshals' view
– an obvious hand over point at Springhead Hill with good visibility.
– no shelter available from the weather for Marshalls or support teams.
Other users of the SDW view
– change over is at the top of the Downs away from any roads, houses or
farms. Only possible disruption might be a crowded car park.
N.B. one of the simplest ways of mitigating these risks is for all involved
to apply common sense and good manners throughout the day.

Leg 12; Littleton Farm (grid ref. 951144) to Cocking Hill car park (grid
ref. 875167).
Chichester Runners, 2008 Revised by Stubbington Green 2010
5.25 miles (measured by GPS). Initial climb of 115m over 1km then gently undulating (+/- 25m),
final descent of 125m over the last 1.6km.
Start in field alongside the South Downs Way, off A285 Petworth Road. Start height 120m.
Finish at Cocking Hill car park off A286 Midhurst Road. Finish height 110m.
Although the A285 is not particularly busy cars travel fast along this road and incoming runners
need to be careful about crossing it before the changeover.
Start in the field and climb up to the top right hand corner to turn left onto farm track and then right
(rejoining SDW) through the gate and into a large open field. The route is very clear and leads up
across the field, fairly steeply at first then levelling slightly, through a gate, into another field
towards woods at the top. Follow SDW through the woods to the top of the climb (235m). This is
about .8 of a mile. Straight across at the junction and follow SDW along the top with trees to the
left and open field to the right (2 miles). Then back into wooded area still following the track along
the top, which gently undulates all the way. Ignore any turnings either left or right. After 3 miles,
there is a fence on your right hand side, this continues for another mile. Just before 4 miles you’ll
notice a wildlife observation post and a second across the field after another half mile. Shortly
after the track begins to descend and has fields fenced off on either side. Beware the track is
fairly steep and has loose stones which could cause tripping hazards. The track is also very
rutted which could cause you to slide left or right and with a possibility of going over on your
ankles. The final stretch levels off a little and has a tarmac top before reaching the A286. This is
a busy road with traffic travelling very fast. This is a two baton change over so you do not need to
cross the road - the outgoing runner will already be on the other side.
N.B. Drinking water tap, 250m east of Cocking Hill car park back up tarmac track towards Hill Barn
Farm on right hand side.
Very little chance to take the wrong direction, just follow the track; all junctions are clearly marked
with SDW logo.
Generally the track is good enough to drive a 4x4 car along, usually fairly hard in the summer no
danger of flooding. The only hazards are the stony rutted descent and the busy road crossings at
either end.

Leg 13 - Midhurst
king Hill Barn to Harting Car Park
The quickest way from Littleton Farm to Cocking is to go South of the Downs and through Singleton. Parking will be in the field on the South East side of the
Downs. If the normal car park is full then the marshal will direct team busses to the field on the East side of the road.
THERE IS NO LOO STOP HERE. Any team using the field to have a loo stop will put the future of the race in jeopardy and will therefore be disqualified from the
event immediately.
The nearest loo stop is in the Grange Centre (race HQ for the Midhurst 10k) where there are loos in the car park and in the Leisure Centre.
This is a two baton changeover. The leg starts from the side of the road on the West side of the 286.
This is one of the longest legs of the Relay and is usually run at the hottest part of the day. Much of the route is exposed so take care to avoid dehydration and
sunburn.
All of the major junctions are signposted, but you have to look out for them as the SDR does not always follow the most obvious path! The most common
mistake is to miss the first right hand turn after you leave the first wooded area. Runners have a choice of routes at the end of the run where the SDW lets you
go around the bottom or over the top of Beacon Hill and Pen Hill. Both routes are permissible.
This leg has some of the steepest downhill sections on the SDW. Particular care should be taken if the chalk is wet.
The first 3 miles of bridleway are very rutted. Runners who use the grass along the side of the fences need to be careful of old fence posts sticking out of ground,
which are hidden by long grass.

Risk Assessment for Leg 16
Compiled by Tony Cooley, Chichester Runners. May 2010
At change-over head east on an even pavement for 100m; at this point you cross a
road and the traffic could be busy with other teams leaving.
The track from here is wide, uphill and fairly good condition, until you start to go
downhill, when it narrows and is quite uneven.
After 1.5 miles you cross a minor road [look both ways] and onto another track. This
is fairly even to start but with a few roots sticking up and becomes uneven with loose
stones A left turn up ahead leads onto a concrete road/farm track. At the bottom of
this, is a minor road, turn right and follow the SDW signs through the fishery and up
the steep field with cows in. Close all gates behind you. The last 200m beside the
road is narrow and rutted.

Risk Assessment for Leg 17

Hazard: Traffic: Individual runners should be ok. running their legs along the traffic
light lanes along the course. Leg 17 has only the A32 as a main road. Where the
runners cross the A32 at Exton it has sufficient verge and has good visibility in both
directions. Only if the weather became foggy would it be necessary to put up warning
signs to traffic.

Holden Farm and Chilcomb Sports
Ground (562268 to 499289) Assessor: Rob Bentley
Activity: Cross-country running Number of persons at possible risk: 25+
Hazards involved with Activity/Area:
1. Lack of preparatory training undertaken
2. Muscular injuries
3. Skeletal injuries
4. Collision with motor vehicles at start, finish, road section and 3 other road
crossing points
5. Trips on uneven surface or exposed tree roots
6. Dehydration
7. Illness
8. Getting lost
9. Fading daylight
Existing Safety Measures/Controls:
1. Race instructions inform participants that this is an arduous event and should not
be undertaken lightly. (1)
2. Participants should ensure that they have warmed-up sufficiently before setting
off. (2)
3. Participants “carrying” injuries or suffering from any illness should not undertake
the run. (2, 3, 7)
4. Race instructions advise participants to carry a mobile telephone to inform support
teams of any problems. (2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8)
5. Race instructions advise participants to be aware of traffic at changeover points
and road crossings. Drivers of team transport are advised to exercise care when
manoeuvring in and out of changeover points. There is sufficient parking at both
the start and the finish of the route if drivers of team transport are considerate
when parking. (4)
6. Participants should ensure that they are well hydrated before setting off and, if
thought necessary, carry water. (There is a tap at Holden Farm that has been
made available in previous years.) (6)
7. Race instructions advise participants to recce the route before the event. Although
the route is signposted, there is still the possibility of getting lost. Teams are
“booked-out” at the start of the run and “booked-in” at the finish. (8)
8. A cut-off point is in place before the start of this leg aimed at stopping fading
daylight being an issue. (9)

3. Runners are to take great care when crossing the single-track road at 552281. The
road is not busy. Visibility is good in both directions at the crossing point.
4. Runners are to take great care when running on the road between 514278 and
506285. The road is single-track and not busy. Runners should position
themselves so that any on-coming traffic has maximum visibility of them,
normally on the right side of the road.
Note: Marshalls have no authority to stop traffic. The 2 crossing points at which
marshalls are provided have good visbility in both directions. Runners must obey
instructions given by marshalls at all times.
