Christmas Tree and Holiday Lights Safety Reminders!
The Christmas Season is upon us once again. The Presque Isle Fire Department would
like to remind everyone of some of the dangers with real Christmas trees and Holiday
decorations.
When selecting a real tree, choose one that the needles do not fall off when touched. Ask
when the tree was harvested and where it came from. Trees are not always local. Make
sure you cut a minimum of two inches off the bottom before installing it in a stand.
Make sure your stand is sturdy enough and adequate size for your tree. Never install a
tree near heat sources, especially fire places. Never block exits with your Christmas tree
and keep your tree watered regularly. Keep inspecting your tree throughout the season
for dryness. There are also fire retardant sprays available to spray on real trees. Never
use real candles near your tree.
With Christmas lights, make sure that you never connect more than the amount of strands
that the manufacturer recommends. Inspect your light strands before installing them
looking for frayed wires or broken bulbs. Even the broken or burned out bulbs carry
electricity. Always use a GFCI breaker system when multiple outlet connections are
needed. Never use cheater plugs or adapters without a ground. The quality of your lights
determines the life of the lights. LED lights last much longer and are more efficient.
They are cooler to the touch as well. The bigger bulbs tend to give off more heat. Also,
ensure the lights that you buy are UL listed.
If you need any information on these topics, please feel free to contact the Presque Isle
Fire Department at 769-0881. As always please remember to check your smoke detectors
at least once a month.
