There are five traditional dances known in
India.
Bharathanatyam
Kathakali
Odissi

Kuchipudi
All these dances are based on body movement,
facial expressions, dresses and Make up
Bharathanatyam
This dance is from south
India. It is from the state
called TamilNadu.
It is the oldest dance
know in Indian history.
The Dancers wear a lot of
jewelry and dress up.
They act a story out by
dancing and changing
there facial expression to
different moods

Kathakali
Thisndance is a classical dance a kerela
It depicts stories of good over evil.
They try to act out the story of ramayan
and Mahabharat
Important features are lots of make up
and colorful; costume.

Odissi
This dance is from east of
India
The dance originated in
the temple of Orissa.
Dance depicts scenes
from Krishna
The three body bend
characterizes this dance
called Tribhanga.

Kathak
Kathak is the classical dance of north India
The work kathak means “tell a story”
The Characteristics of kathak are rhythmic
foot work with gungroo on (ankle bells),
spectacular spins and presenting a story.
Pundit Birju Maharajah is a known Kathak
performer in India

Kuchipudi is a dance from
Andhra pradesh
This dance was started in
a village of Andhra
Pradesh by Sidrendra
Yogi
Traditionally only Bhramin
men were allowed to do
this dance Now A lot of
women are doing it.

is in the rhythm, Foot
movement and facial
expression.
