Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between particular behaviour change
techniques (BCTs) and theoretical domains of behaviour change. This task should take no
more than 1.5 hours and there is no time limit.

To take part, you must have designed interventions that specifically identify BCTs, or been
involved in writing manuals or protocols of behaviour change interventions, or have
undertaken a narrative or systematic review of behaviour change literature.

You will be asked for minimal personal information (age, sex, country of residence, and
information about your experience with behaviour change theory / interventions). All data
will be treated with full confidentiality and you can withdraw from the study at any point
                                        without reason.

Please email ruhina.ladha.09@ucl.ac.uk if you have any questions relating to this study.
                                                 1

It is important you read all of these instructions prior to completing the sorting task.

On the following page, the names and definitions of the 14 theoretical domains of behaviour
change are reported. Please familiarise yourself with these before starting the task.

On pages 3 to 32, you will find your response sheet including the label and definitions of 87
behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and a response column with names of the 14 domains
                                       for each BCT.

Finally, on the last page there is an information sheet where some personal details are
                                              requested.

                                            Your task

        1. To allocate 87 BCTs to theory domain(s) based on the mechanism of change (not
mode of delivery). Please indicate your allocation by underlining or highlighting the
relevant domain name(s) in the response column. Note: You can allocate BCTs to
                                          multiple domains.

        2. To rate your confidence for each BCT allocation. For each BCT, please rate your
confidence from 1 ‘not at all confident’ to 10 ‘extremely confident’ in the brackets
after the underlined or highlighted theory domain(s).
