These make the use of IRC more friendly in the future and prevents someone else from using your name. We do urge you, especially if connected by the web client, to change the default generic names before logging in. REGISTER YOUR ACCOUNT The following few steps are necessary to register your account on the IRC. This is optional!! 1. Where you normally type your messages, enter the following line: /NickServ REGISTER password mailaddress 2. This will register the user account you are currently logged on with, the password obviously need to be your password and a valid email address should be entered. Within a few seconds, a mail will be sent to this mail address to confirm the registration. For example, a proper command for me would be: /NickServ REGISTER mypassword firstname.lastname@example.org 3. Follow the steps in the mail, which contains a similar command to confirm the registration. Benefit of registration is that your username is now reserved for the future. No one else can use your nick on the IRC server. The registration remains held for a period of 35 idle days so at least one connection every month is required to keep the username registered.
