2. Who we are

  a. Our Background
    Medical Access Uganda Limited (MAUL) started in 1998 as a pilot project of the Joint
    United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in collaboration with the Government of
    Uganda and participating pharmaceutical companies, it is now self sustaining.

    MAUL negotiates for subsidized prices with International pharmaceutical companies for
    antiretroviral (ARV) therapies and other drugs and sells them at the lowest possible
    prices. MAUL customers for ARVS are Ministry of Health accredited treatment centers.
    Other customers include registered Pharmacies, Clinics and Hospitals for non
    antiretroviral (NARV) drugs.

    MAUL has been involved in the procurement and distribution of drugs for PEPFAR funded
    clients as well as for other treatment sites approved by the Ministry of Health. MAUL has
    too been distributing drugs for Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) in Uganda
    to all the implementing partner sites. In an effort to further the objectives of its
    Partners, MAUL would like to support in the distribution of drugs to the up country
    regional sites as specified. MAUL is also strengthening its procurement centre to be able
    to serve a diverse base of potential clients.

3. What we offer

     Advocacy for Improved Access and Price Negotiation

     We advocate, procure, distribute ARVs and other pharmaceutical drugs to both private
     and public organisations located all over Uganda. We work with over 20 suppliers to
     stock a portfolio of over 150 branded and generic products.

     Supply Chain Services

     We support our clients to forecast product needs, conduct system based procurement,
     warehouse products and distribute products to their centers or outlets. We also support
     our suppliers through; technical representation, market research, drug registration,
     marketing and promotion and setting up of clinical trial logistics.

     Health System Solutions

     We build the capacity of local health systems through:

            Training in drug logistics, forecasting, rational drug use, adherence and patient
             counseling

            Performance of drug logistics assessments

            Development and implementation of inventory management systems and tools

            Program evaluation

            Dissemination of drug information

     Third Party Services

     We provide the following services to programs and other parties outside our distribution
     cycle:
                      Drug logistics services including; procurement support and monitoring,
                       warehousing and distribution

           We are also working with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to supply ARVs to PREFRAR
           funded programs in Uganda including Mbuya Outreach, Mildmay Center, Mulago Mbarara
           Teaching Hospitals’, Joint AIDS Program (MJAP), Baylor School of Medicine – Paediatric
           Infectious Diseases Clinic (PIDC), Rakai Health Sciences Program and The AIDS Support
           Organization (TASO) among others.



           NARV Clients

           We sell and distribute medicines to hospitals including Mulago Hospital, Rubaga Hospital,
           Nsambya Hospital, International Hospital Kampala, and Nakasero Hospital among others. We
           also sell and distribute medicines to private pharmacies and clinics.

      How do we procure from Medical Access?
      Medical Access distributes Anti Retroviral Drugs (ARVs) to only Ministry of Health Accredited
      Centers. The accreditation process is a quality control mechanism that ensures that ARVs are
      prescribed in a safe and effective way by qualified health workers and institutions.
Drugs other than ARVs are sold to all registered pharmacies and health care centers.

How does an institution get accredited by MoH?
Interested institutions apply to MoH for accreditation. The Accreditation is short process that
assesses the capacity of the applying institutions to administer ARVs. Interested institutions
can also contact us so that we can facilitate this process.

Please send us the full list of drugs distributed by Medical Access?
The full list of drugs that we distribute can be obtained from our offices at Joint Medical
Stores Building or at our headquarters at Plot 26, Nakasero.

Does Medical Access distribute generic drugs?
Medical Access distributes a wide variety of generic ARVs and other generic drugs. We also
distribute a wide portfolio of branded ARVs and other non ARV drugs.

What other Services are offered by Medical Access?
Medical Access has established a Centre for Health Systems Strengthening Centre to provide
the following services;

       Capacity Building of staff and health facilities

       Procurement Services

       Program Evaluation

       Drug Information Dissemination

       Health management Information Systems

       Local technical representation

       Facilitate registration of drugs with National Drug Authority

       Warehousing and Distribution



Does MAUL distribute products and services outside Uganda?
Medical Access currently distributes products and services to only centers within Uganda.

       For the ARVs distribution is only to accredited treatment centers within Uganda

       For the Non ARVs there are distributed country wide to Hospitals, licensed
        pharmacies and clinics
