This Thursday morning is the UES Sports Day. We will come to school in our PE kits as we hope to
begin at around 8.30am. Please come down to support and cheer us on. But do remember a change of
clothes for the afternoon back in class.
Unit of Work
This week we have looked at how humans use and change rivers. Dams are one way humans use
rivers, relying on the force of water. This week you will design your own water wheel using the
guidelines provided. Please be sure to set out your written report of your experiment using the
experiment guidelines we have given you when you completed the plant experiment.
Aim: To find out if water can create energy
You may need to set aside some time to complete your Singapore River map.
Writing
Complete the grammar sheet on direct speech. Due on THURSDAY.
Reading
Remember you should be reading 30 minutes a weeknight.
Please log in your organiser the book title and amount you have read. Once you finish the book, use the
great Reading Record to show what wonderful books you have read and ideas you have gleaned.
Reading Records – Due - GSt Thursday; SBe Wednesday; ARo Friday.
Spelling
Keep working on the definitions of your River vocabulary in UOW and any spare moments you have. Do
not use a dictionary or computer. Write it WHEN you know it!
This week you have a word search AND crossword to answer. Both should be easy if you’ve been
learning the river vocabulary over the last few weeks.

Writing Focus- Myths
Grade Five focused on writing narratives last term; more specifically
modern day myths. Each student chose one of their favourite Greek
myths, which they had been reading with Mrs Stubber, and used the
outline. They then transported these myths into modern times, using a
similar story line and moral. The collections of class myths are currently
being compiled into books and will be found in classroom libraries.
Better to write for yourself and have no public,
than to write for the public and have no self.

Journal Writing
Although it is important for students to understand structural
conventions of writing, it is also important to make time for more
‘free flow’ writing. During journal writing time students are
encouraged to express themselves using the written word. They
can write poetry, their plans for conquering their latest computer
game or simply in a diary format. The choices are endless.
We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection.
