PRESIDENT'S MESSAgE CHANE REAgAN
Planting Seeds
When I first got into business, I always heard people say, “You have got to plant
seeds and then water them”. As we all know so well what it means to plant seeds in
our business, I find myself wrapping up this year in hopes that I have helped plant
many seeds that will be fruitful for many harvests for our association. (LUTC,
processes that can be repeated and most importantly, getting great people involved).
Growing up as a small town farm kid this is something that helps me understand
how valuable our time together has been. Even though we sometimes feel that we
are going nowhere, I will assure you that we are planting our seeds, and they will
be fruitful.
Let me explain. When growing up, we generally took our best wheat seed from our prior year’s harvest.
We would plant the seed, pray for rain and then as the seed sprouted, it would begin to develop into a plant.
Then, it would begin to develop leaves, growing taller, developing a head of grain which would eventually
be harvested each year. Some of the grain would be sold to provide for our family financially, but yet the
best grain would be held until the next year to be planted in order to begin this process over again.
Our Association is no different, and I appreciate everybody who helps in the development of this process.
The Seeds
To our Board of Directors and our Vice Presidents: I want to thank you for the efforts you put forth. For
you to share the precious time you have to volunteer is admirable. I ask each of you to do one thing, “Never
forget how you got to where you are today, and then help somebody else get there, so they can do it better.
Find your successor.
The Water-These are the people that are developing our future.
President Elect
Ted Erck, you have been an amazing leader, and I can assure our Association that the responsibilities are
being left in great hands. Ted is an honorable man and has the highest standards and integrity. It has been
an honor to work with you this year.
Past Presidents
To our Past Presidents who made a difference this year, I tip my hat to you. So many people have touched
my life along the way, and I appreciate your leadership and your help in mentoring me and this Association.
Our Members and Sponsors
Thank you for supporting our efforts with our local fundraising efforts. With out you, we could not deliver.
Our Executive Office
Ellie and Janet, thank you for your diligent efforts to keep things running smoothly.
In closing, I am honored to be able to say I have served as the President of this association, with so many
outstanding individuals. The admiration I have for this association and its strong line of leaders makes it
an honor and a privilege to say I was your NAIFA Houston President for 2010-2011.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER
In each of my articles, I have tried to point out the value of your NAIFA membership.
There are some benefits to your NAIFA membership that I know you can wrap your
arms around a little easier than others. Honestly, I have learned quite a bit myself
writing to you. I have become more aware of the behind the scenes work being done
by NAIFA employees, contractors and more importantly members like you and me.
For example, three of your Texas NAIFA members, Doug Aycock, Doug Massey
and Tommy Williams, worked on your behalf.
March 4, 2011
Massey, Williams and Aycock – Testified, lobbied and Senator Williams endorsed a
bill that will increase from $100,000 to $250,000 the limits of protection for annui-
ties in instances where an insurance company becomes insolvent or is designated as
impaired by the Texas Commissioner of Insurance.
March 8, 2011
Massey and Aycock - Testified against a bill in front of the Texas Senate - Senate Bill 381 relates to a
partial withdrawal from and/or surrender of annuity contracts and life insurance policies, requiring
notarized signatures of the owner and the presentation of the annuity contract/insurance policy to the
agent who sold the product or the current agent of record.
Although bills may be introduced with good intentions, many times the legislators do not know the “real”
ramifications that it has to their constituents. This is where NAIFA steps in to provide you the number one
benefit to your membership, protection of the products and services you offer your clients.
Not only is NAIFA in existence to insure your professional career, there are countless other programs and
services that will make you a better insurance and financial professional. Some of these are:
The NAIFA Virtual Library - unlimited 24/7 access to the NAIFA Virtual Library. Whether you are a
new advisor or agent, or an experienced producer, the NAIFA Virtual Library is your key to a myriad of
sales support tools and resources that will help you grow and succeed in your business.
NAIFA Online Seminar Series - The NAIFA Online Seminar Series features training and information
programs on various topics important to running your business and enhancing your success, including
practice management, sales and marketing and prospecting, each with specific content for every career
stage. These video-based programs are further enhanced by downloadable print materials and resources.
NAIFA ClientCast – A free monthly 24/7 podcast about insurance and estate planning strategies that is
forwarded by you to your clients and prospects each month.
Business Management Discounts –* CopyTalk (mobile dictation service) * Horsesmouth (Daily online
service) * Smarsh Financial Visions Website Development *Bank of America * Brooks Brothers
* JoS. A. Bank * Eliminate ID Theft * FedEx * Mozy (online backup) * ATT * TMobile * HP * UPS
These are just a few of the many discounted and free services provided by your NAIFA membership.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you as your NAIFA Houston membership chairperson. I look
forward to many more years of serving each of you and to the growth of this very worthy and necessary
association.

NAIFA member directive regarding the
use of IFAPAC Contributions
On March 14, 2011, an SEC “pay to play” rule designed to limit the influence of political contributions
by investment advisers and certain associated persons in the awarding of advisory contracts by state and
local governments went into effect. Among other things, the rule prohibits investment advisers from
receiving compensation for services provided to a state or local government for two years following political
contributions to certain state or local officials.
In response to the rule, a number of companies have adopted compliance requirements that limit contributions by investment adviser
representatives to political action committees (PACs) and state or local officials. You must check with your company’s compliance
department regarding any limitations on your ability to make political contributions under the pay-to-play rule. (If you are covered
by the rule, your compliance department may limit your contribution to only NAIFA’s federal pAC. If you are not covered, your
compliance department should permit your contribution to be shared between NAIFA’s federal pAC and your state association pAC.)
After you have consulted your compliance department, please check the applicable boxes below to instruct IFApAC regarding the
appropriate distribution of your IFApAC contribution. Note: If you do not check a box, your entire contribution will be directed to NAIFA’s
federal PAC.
❏❏ I have read and understand this directive. (required)
CheCk one box:
❏❏ Please continue to share my IFAPAC contribution between NAIFA’s federal PAC and my NAIFA state association PAC.
I agree to reconfirm my compliance status and change this directive, if necessary, should I change or add companies.
or
❏❏ Please direct my entire contribution to NAIFA’s federal PAC, to be used only for contributions to national party committees and the
campaigns of candidates (except state and local officials) for the U.S. Congress.
Contributions to IFAPAC must be personal, not corporate. Contributions made on corporate or LLC accounts will be directed in
their entirety to NAIFA’s federal administrative fund to help defray the costs of administering NAIFA’s federal PAC. NAIFA disclaims
responsibility for any damage or liability that may arise from contributions to IFAPAC based on the SEC “Pay to Play” Rule or from any
company compliance requirements related to that Rule.

Active NAIFA-Texas / NAIFA Members
Can Now Receive 4 Hours of Self-Study CE
NAIFA-Texas member and State Senator Tommy Williams from The Woodlands introduced and
passed Senate Bill 265 during the Regular Session of the 79th Legislature in 2005. SB 265 is
landmark legislation and was a major legislative initiative pursued by NAIFA-Texas.
SB 265 authorizes the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) to grant up to four (4) hours of
continuing education credit to an agent who is an active member of a state or national
insurance association. To implement Senate Bill 265, TDI adopted new rules, adding Section
19.1020 to Title 28, Texas Administrative Code. Licensees must claim CE credit under Section
19.1020 by sending TDI, or its designee, upon request, an affirmation that the licensee has
completed at least the number of hours in activities the licensee is claiming for CE credit.
Licensees may accumulate up to two (2) hours for reviewing educational materials provided by
national or state associations in which they are members and up to four (4) hours for attending
educational presentations sponsored by the state or national association.
CE hours under Section 19.1020 shall apply only as self-study credit and shall not count
towards the licensee’s ethics, classroom, or classroom equivalent CE requirements.
Association members requesting this credit must submit to TDI an “Association
Credit Form” provided by TDI.
For more information, contact NAIFA-Texas CEO Des Taylor at des.taylor@naifa-texas.org.
TIPS:
1) Must be an active member of a state or national insurance association in good standing.
TIP: Stay current on paying dues.
2) Up to two hours of credit can be earned by reviewing the educational materials from the
national association.
TIP: Read the NAIFA Advisor Today magazines and save them or at least save
the covers.
3) Not more than four hours – the cumulative number of hours of credit claimed for
attending the educational presentations.
TIP: NAIFA Convention, NAIFA-Texas Convention, and TLRT Roundup
presentations qualify, as do local meetings when the speaker is from NAIFA-
Texas / NAIFA. Qualifying meetings will be advertised in local publications
and newsletters.
4) Attending educational presentations at the Texas Leaders Round Table.
TIP: Keep handouts.
5) Attending educational presentations at the NAIFA-Texas and NAIFA conventions.
TIP: Keep handouts.
