There’s No Excuse for Not Serving God
Growth Group Discussion Guide
Message given Sunday, February 14, 2010
Armbrust Wesleyan Church
Welcome to our growth group. Join in with these opening questions to help to get to know one another.
• Go around the room. 1. Remind the group of you name. 2. Tell the group your biggest fear. Is it snakes? Is it public
speaking? Something else? Do you have a story about this fear?
• Pastor Tim shared examples from home and work about how getting others to help us, to do something for us, to work
together with us is such a challenge and struggle sometimes. Do you have a struggle at home or at work with getting
some help from others with work?
Read Exodus 3:10-15. Moses encounters God in the burning bush where God tells Moses to go to bring God’s people out of
Egypt.
• Have you ever had an encounter with God where you believe He was telling you to do something specific? What was
it? What did you do?
• In response to God’s request, Moses begins making excuses for why he can’t do or doesn’t want to do what God asks
of him. What fears do you think are motivating Moses’ excuse making? Do you indentify with Moses’ response in
any way?
• God tells Moses that his name is “I am who I am.” What do you think God is trying to tell us by saying this is his
name? What does God’s name mean to you today? Why?
Read Exodus 4:1-17. Moses continues with the excuses and God continues to give Moses grace. Moses is afraid people
won’t listen to him or believe Him, he insists he is not a good speaker, and he just wants God to send someone else.
• Which of Moses 3 excuses here can you relate to? Why?
• God gives Moses 3 miracles to help the people believe God sent him. Do you think the miracles have symbolic
meaning? If God were to give you 3 miracles to prove something, what would you ask for them to be? Why?
Read Mark 10:35-45 and John 13:1-15. .
• What does Jesus teach us about serving in these two passages? According to what Jesus teaches here, is serving
others an option for followers of Jesus Christ?
• How are you involved in serving God today? Do you think God is calling you to some new area of service? What is
it? What excuses do you have to resolve with yourself?
Closing.
• How can this group pray for you tonight?
• Take 5-10 minutes to pray around the room. Pray a sentence or two at a time per person. Be certain to pray for each
person who is considering serving God in a new way.
