Objectives:
• List the characteristics of the earth’s 3
major zones

interior.

possible source of the earth’s magnetism

§2-1 Earth: A Unique Planet
• Only known planet to have liquid water
• Atmosphere with Oxygen
• Only planet with Life as we know it
today.

Remember “Goldilocks & the 3 Bears” ?
Statistics
• Equator ≈ 40,074 km

• The earth is covered by
mostly water => ¾
• 97 % is in the oceans

The Earth’s Interior
The MOHO
• Discovered in
1900
• Place where the
speed of seismic
waves Increases
when going
through the upper
mantle.
The Earth as a Magnet

Magnetosphere
 The area of space around the earth that is affected by the
Earth’s magnetism
 Caused by the iron in the core of the earth
Law of Gravitation
Discovered by Sir Isaac
Newton
Weight is a measure of the
pull of Gravity
Newtons (N)
Pounds (lbs)
If Gravity changes, then
