Assistant Headteacher – Director of Maths (and College Development)
Salary: Leadership L11 – L15
Start date: Easter 2012 (or earlier by negotiation)
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the Senior Leadership Team to help
move the College in the next stage of its development. We are looking for an
exceptional and dedicated teacher who has proven leadership/management
experience, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the qualities to inspire,
motivate and lead the College to meet the challenges of the future.
Everyone at the College is passionate about children’s learning and development.
We wish to appoint an outstanding teacher and leader to this newly created post to
oversee the development and further improvements in Maths. The College
development aspect of the post will be by negotiation with the successful candidate.
Outcomes at Key Stage 4 are imbalanced with 70% of students making at least 3
levels of progress in English, but only 30% in Maths. Similarly 63% of our students
gained an A*-C grade in English, whereas only 39% achieved similar grades in
Maths. The overall number of students gaining 5+ A*-C grades was 75%, with 38%
gaining 5+ A*-C including English and Maths.
We wish to appoint an individual who can help us address this imbalance by
strategically influencing the development of Maths within the College. Initially the
post will demand a total Maths input plus one area of College development. After
establishing a platform for development the successful post holder will move into
more whole college roles. This is a successful development model that we have
used in ICT to the benefit of the college and the post holder.
The Maths department currently consists of 6 full time teachers and a part time
curriculum assistant. It is homed in the Create Learning Pod in a suite of new
classrooms. It has access to a variety of ICT equipment including banks of laptops.
All teachers have their own laptops with access to their own secure area at both the
college and home. The Create Learning Pod is ICT rich with a large central learning
space which can be used by large groups. It has its own staff base and houses
offices for Student Progress Leaders and members of the SLT.
The College is committed to developing the talents of its teaching staff through its
popular CPD system. Teachers belong to Teaching and Learning Groups that
concentrate on developing practice. We use our own Learning Champions in the
delivery, showcasing and coaching of teaching and learning themes. Themes are
decided from the views of the staff as well as good practice researched from across
the country. We encourage our staff to take part in personal external CPD and try to
find the funding to support them.
The current Senior Leadership Team is made up of Headteacher (absent), Acting
Headteacher, 3 permanent Assistant Heads, Director of Resources and 2 temporary
Assistant Heads at a strategic level. These Colleagues are joined by 3 Advanced
Skills Teachers, a Curriculum Leader and a Student Progress Leader to form a wider
SLT that meets on an operational and review basis.
We are looking to appoint the right candidate as soon as possible. This will be for an
Easter 2012 start, or earlier by negotiation. We realise that some candidates would
be reluctant to leave examination students at this time of the academic year,
consequently, we would look at the possibility of a part time role up too the end of
the Summer 2012 examination period in exceptional circumstances.
We look forward to receiving your application.
