• Causes- Protestant v. Catholic- Philip tried
to stop Protestantism
• Cause- Prosperous middle class- Taxes
raised.
• Results- Dutch flood their own country to
drive out Spanish
• Result- Dutch Prosper
Louis XIV
• Fights several wars to expand his territory
including attacking the Netherlands.
• Small countries united together against
France.
• War of Spanish Succession
30 Years War
• Protestants v. Catholics- Peace of Augsburg had
left German princes suspicious.
• Catholic Emperor closed protestant churches in
Bohemia and they revolted
• Hapsburg triumphs and defeats
• Peace of Westphalia- weakened Spain & Austria,
Strengthened France, German prince more
independent, new style of negotiation, ends
religious wars in Europe.
Austrian Succession & 7 years
• Austria loses territory to Prussia
• 7 years war leads to changing allies
• First world war (Europe, India, and N.
America)
• A lot of territory changes on other
continents.
• Major British Victory
Ivan the Terrible
• Defeat of the Tatars in Kazan.
• Expands Russian territory to the East.
Peter the Great
• Develops a huge western style army that he
conquers the east. (Map p.533)
• He also fights a long war with Sweden to
gain his warm water port so that he could
compete with the west.
English Civil War
• Kings James I and Charles I both offended
members of parliament and the powerful groups of
puritans by their practices. When Parliament
passed laws to limit the kings power, the king tried
to have the leaders arrested but they escaped.
• This will lead into civil war.
• Puritan Rebels won and executed the King in
public.
• Restoration- After the death of Cromwell the
monarch was restored but with greater limitations.
• Glorious Revolution- King was removed in a
bloodless revolution setting up a Constitutional
Monarchy.
