  District 140 Students Turn In Award Winning Performances at SWIC Declamation Competition

Tinley Park, IL (April 26, 2011) – Congratulations to the members of the Prairie View and Grissom
Middle School Declamation teams on their award winning performances at their April SWIC

Prairie View captured first place among the twelve conference teams, while Grissom turned in a
respectable 4th place finish.

Prairie View winners were: Abbey Carlson - 1st Place in Oratorical Declamation; Elizabeth McKernan
and Kaileigh Pieroth - 1st Place in Humorous Duet; Madison Palucki - 1st Place in Prose Interpretation;
Maria Szczasny - 1st Place in Humorous Interpretation; Joe Ward - 1st Place in Dramatic Interpretation.
Also finishing strong was Leah Borak in Verse Interpretation.

Grissom winners were: James Melody and Patrick Mulcahy – 2nd Place in Humorous Duet and Jacob
Bedell – 3rd Place in Humorous Interpretation. Also finishing strong were Anna Boomsma in Prose;
Marissa Bonareck in Verse; Umair Bhutto in Oratorical Declamation; and Alexis Knippen in Dramatic
Interpretation. A special thanks goes out to manager, Courtney Szkarlat.

Declamation is a competitive speech team whereby students prepare and present performances in six
different categories, including Humorous Duet Acting, Verse (Poetry) Reading, Dramatic Interpretation,
Humorous Interpretation, Oratorical Declamation (Speech), and Prose Reading. Student performance
pieces are three to seven minutes in length and are judged using criteria selected for each category
including vocal variety, eye contact, gestures, and articulation.

Congratulations to the District 140 Declamation Teams and coaches Mrs. Wendy Wasilewski and Ms.
Lauren Mertens on an exceptional year!
