GPA Calculator: Converting Letter Grades To
          Numerical Equivalents

           AACRAO Conference, 2007

             Boston, Massachusetts

                  Ron Urban

               Whitman College
             Objectives:

● Calculate minimum letter grade
necessary for each class for student to
    remain in academic good standing

● Provide GPA letter grade-to-numerical
value advising information for students who
    require projected academic performance
    such as honors attainment
                    Solutions-I:
• Commercial AIS Packages
*Limited capability: Simple utility projecting overall
GPA. Limited letter grade-to-numerical value ability.
*GPA calculation requires separate screen or operation

*Not available from all vendors, or else at substantial
  additional cost
*May not provide desired flexibility and “what if”
  capability
                   Solutions-II:
• Excel-based GPA Calculator
*Universally accessible: “Everyone” has Excel

*User has total control over data entry

*Easy to use—just enter classes, credits and grades

*Can be modified easily for different applications, e.g.,
  good standing, honors calculations, etc.
                   Example I

semester to reach a 2.0 in his Chem major?
Required Information:
