{tab=Welcome}

Welcome to Room 19.  I have the pleasure of teaching subjects in English to the grade 5 and 6
French Immersion students.  This includes the following subjects:

     - English Language Arts
     - Social Studies
     - Visual Arts
     - Dance and Drama  (Grade 5 class only)
     -

Academic Responsibility

Students in Room 19 are expected to assume responsibility for their own learning. This means
that they must pay attention, participate in class discussions, begin tasks when instructed,
complete all homework and projects on time and accept the responsibility for asking questions if
they need help.

Extra Help

Extra help is available to students Tuesday and Thursday before school. Students seeking
extra help are to arrive at the office at 8:30 a.m. and request to come up to the classroom.
Students who arrive significantly later than 8:30 may not be allowed up if there is not sufficient
time before the bell to address their needs.

                                                                                               3 / 11

{tab=General Info}

As you know, French immersion students have their school day divided between instruction in
French and English. The Grade 6 class will receive their English instruction in the mornings
and their French instruction in the afternoons. The Grade 5
students will receive their French instruction in the mornings and English instruction in the
afternoons.

Reading

Strong reading skills are an important foundation for all learning. We will expect that students
will have English and French reading material of their own choice available for reading in the
classroom each day throughout the year. Students will keep a Reading Log as part of their
personal learning portfolios. Please consider planning trips to the local public library to give your
child access to a wonderful variety of reading experiences .

Gym Schedule

This year our timetable has been set up on a rotation of Day 1 through Day 5.  The Grade 6 cla
ss is scheduled for use of the gym every Day 1, 2, and 5.
The
Grade 5
class is scheduled every Day 1, 3 and 4.  Beginning this year, Junior students are expected to
change into appropriate clothes in order to fully participate in the physical education program.
Please ensure that your child has shorts, a t-shirt and running shoes available at school on gym
days. In addition, students will participate in Daily Vigorous Physical Activity on non-gym days
and should keep this in mind when dressing for school.

                                                                                                4 / 11

Agendas

We will be using agendas to plan our days, record homework and assignments and reflect on
our achievements. These agendas will be coming home each night and should provide you with
a good idea of what your child has done each day as well as what homework and assignments
are due. It also provides a daily method of communication between the classroom and the
home.  The agenda is an important tool for helping students develop good time management
habits and personal responsibility. It contains information specific to Sir John A. Macdonald as
well as character education resources that we will be using throughout the year.

School Supplies

Although the school provides basic supplies, the following is a suggested list of items that would
be beneficial for each student: o Pencils (HB work the best) o Erasers o Pencil sharpener with
case to collect the shavings
o
Blue and red pens
o
Ruler
o
Pencil crayons
o
Markers
o
Protractor
o
Lined paper
o
A sturdy pencil case or pencil box
o
One binder (see below!)
o
NO white-out please!

Please note! Students will receive their English instruction in room 19 and French instruction in
room 13. In each classroom, students will be assigned to a desk and can place

                                                                                             5 / 11

materials inside the desk while in that classroom. Because the desks
are shared between the two different classes, students will not be
storing
materials inside a desk.
In each classroom, notes, texts and subject duotangs will be kept in bins.

Students are asked to have a small, ½ to 1-inch binder and a set of subject dividers. This binder
will be used to carry homework and assignments to and from school. Large zippered binders
are not recommended as they are increased bulk and weight in your child’s knapsack.
