UPDATED FALL 2011
Standard 2: New Member Education
Minimum Expectations
The chapter has an elected or appointed officer committed to new member education.
Chapters have a comprehensive, written new member program that promotes scholarship, offers leadership
opportunities, encourages campus involvement, outlines clear expectations of membership and behavior and
provides opportunities for personal development.
Attach an outline of the chapter’s new member program. Be sure the outline includes the projected date
of initiation.
Each chapter’s new member program adheres to the guidelines of the inter/national organization.
Each chapter’s new member program is void of any activities involving alcohol.
Each chapter's new member program is void of any activities that could be considered as hazing.
At least 60% of the new member class initiates into full membership.
Understanding that there are sometimes circumstances outside of a chapter’s control that could
contribute to the initiation percentage being fewer than 60%, please attach a letter of explanation if this
standard is not met.
New members are fully informed of what is expected of them for the duration of their new member education
period. They receive an outline of activities and the date of initiation.
New members are fully informed as to what is expected of them as an active member in their organization; this
includes a complete awareness of financial commitments and attendance requirements.
Exceeds Expectations
At least 90% of the new member class initiates into full membership.
At least 70% of new members participate in a New Member Education series sponsored by the Greek Life
Office and the respective governing councils.
The chapter sponsors at least one retreat per new member class. (A block of at least 4 hours of time, either on
or off campus, which is devoted to activities that promote group unity constitutes a retreat. Exceptions will be
granted for smaller classes in which a retreat isn’t realistic.)
Date of last new member retreat:
The chapter's new member education/orientation programs are planned prior to bids being extended.
